When is a wasp nest dangerous enough to call someone?

Once the colony is established and defending itself — usually late summer, when yellowjackets are at peak population and most aggressive. A nest that looked harmless in June can be a genuine hazard by August.

Why do stink bugs and lady beetles pile up on the house every autumn?

They are looking for somewhere warm to overwinter. On sunny fall days they gather on south and west facing walls, then work into attics, wall voids and crawlspaces through gaps you would never notice.

Once inside they stay dormant until a warm winter day wakes them — which is why they reappear indoors in January and February, long after you thought the problem was over.

This video captures Western thatching ants tending aphids on a bush. The ants collect the sweet honeydew aphids produce, and in return, they protect them from predators. Western thatching ants also hunt other insects, making them a fascinating part of the local ecosystem.
They may visit flowers, but they’re best known for tending aphids and hunting insects rather than acting as important pollinators. Since this colony was away from the home and wasn’t causing a problem, we left it undisturbed and documented this remarkable behavior.

Why do ants keep coming back after you spray them?

Because the spray kills foragers, not the colony. The nest keeps producing replacements, so the trail is back within days. That is why over-the-counter products feel like they work for a week and then stop.

How do you know if you have rats or mice in the walls?

Scratching after dark, droppings along walls or in the garage, chewed packaging, and a musky smell near nesting areas. In the Pacific Northwest, activity climbs sharply once the weather turns cold and wet and rodents start looking for somewhere warm.

We are on track for showers six days out of seven this week. Here is what a week like that does underneath your house.

Bare soil in a crawlspace gives off moisture continuously, and it does not stay down there. It rises into the joists, the subfloor and the sill plates. Wood that stays damp stops being just wood and starts being habitat.

Three things turn up in consistently damp crawlspaces around Whatcom County:

- Moisture ants, which nest in wood that is already wet
- Dampwood termites, which need wet wood and cannot establish in dry wood
- Fungal decay, which is the one that eventually costs real money

Worth being plain about dampwood termites: they are a moisture problem wearing a termite costume. Treating the insects without correcting the water that drew them in is a short-term answer. Sheeting the ground with a sealed v***r barrier, keeping the vents working and getting drainage right is the fix that actually holds. If someone quotes you a treatment and says nothing about where the water is coming from, ask why.

- Insulation sagging or fallen off the joists
- Standing water or soft mud after a wet stretch

During a rodent cleanout and insulation job, we found active dampwood termites in a log sitting inside a broken water heater in a basement with dampwood termite activity. That’s a strong sign of a moisture problem that needs attention.

Here in Washington, dampwood termites are closely tied to wet or decaying wood. Treating the termites alone won’t solve the underlying issue if leaks and other moisture conditions remain. Finding and fixing the moisture source is key to getting the problem under control.
