Today we raise a glass to a David Allen Coe GBNF, a road warrior, a voice that never asked for permission, a true Son of the South and an Outlaw 1%er.

Love him or hate him, you damn sure couldn't ignore him... And that's the point.

David Allen Coe, the roads got quieter, but the echo is going to last forever...

The gr***de landed at their feet.
There was no time to think.
On April 14, 2004, during a patrol near Karabilah, Iraq, Corporal Jason Dunham and his squad were conducting a vehicle checkpoint when insurgents attacked. In the chaos of close combat, one of the attackers dropped a live gr***de near a group of Marines.
It hit the ground. Seconds ticking. Dunham reacted before anyone else could move.
He shouted a warning. He grabbed his helmet.
He threw himself over the gr***de. Curled his body around it.
The explosion tore through him.
Shrapnel ripped into his skull and body, but the Marines standing beside him survived with minimal injuries. They were alive because he absorbed the blast.
He was 22 years old.
Doctors fought for his life for eight days. His parents flew to his bedside. Machines breathed for him. He never regained consciousness. He d*ed on April 22, 2004. Two years later, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His parents stood in the White House while the citation described courage under fire.
But medals cannot return a son. They cannot rewind eight seconds on a dusty road in Iraq.
His fellow Marines remember the sound of that blast.
They remember who moved first. He did not hesitate. He did not step back.
He stepped forward. War produces many moments of violence.
Few are as clear as this. A gr***de. A choice.
And a Marine who decided everyone else would go home instead.
