Do You Have a Fireplace Insert? Make Sure It Was Installed Correctly.

A pellet, wood, or gas insert should not be assumed safe simply because it fits inside the fireplace.

When an insert is installed in a factory-built fireplace, the specific fireplace and insert must be approved for that application and installed according to both manufacturers’ instructions. An incompatible or altered installation may invalidate the fireplace’s listing, create fire or carbon-monoxide risks, and affect warranty or insurance coverage.

Many homeowners did not own the home when the insert was installed and have no documentation showing whether the system is properly listed and vented.

California building standards require approved spark arrestors on chimneys serving solid-fuel-burning fireplaces and appliances. Properly designed spark arrestors help reduce the escape of sparks and embers while helping keep rain, leaves, birds, animals and debris from entering the chimney.

The California Residential Code also establishes specific requirements for:

✅ Proper screen-opening size
✅ Heat- and corrosion-resistant materials
✅ Adequate airflow around the flue opening
✅ Accessibility and removability for chimney cleaning

A damaged, missing, improperly sized or clogged spark arrestor can affect both fire protection and chimney performance.

Hidden cracks and displaced masonry may not be visible without a Level II inspection. If your older chimney has never been thoroughly evaluated, consider having it inspected before use.
