When a hurricane forms in the Gulf, it's easy to think it's only a coastal concern. But storms don't lose all their strength once they make landfall. As they move inland toward Texas, they can still bring heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and enough moisture to overwhelm drainage systems hundreds of miles from where they started.
For Austin this often means flash flooding, downed trees, power outages, and water finding its way into homes and businesses through roofs, windows, and foundations. Low-lying areas and creeks that rise quickly are especially vulnerable, even when the storm itself has weakened significantly by the time it reaches Central and North Texas.
If a system is tracking toward the Gulf, take a few minutes to check your gutters, clear your drains, and know which routes near you are prone to flooding. Being prepared before a storm arrives makes all the difference if water damage does happen.
