🧊 URGENT: Winter Weather Advisory for Your Plumbing
Forecast: Sub-freezing temperatures expected over the next few days.
To our valued customers, With extreme cold on the way, we want to ensure your home stays safe and dry. When water freezes in a pipe, it expands, creating pressure that can cause even the strongest metal or plastic pipe to burst. Please take the following precautions immediately to prevent a plumbing emergency.
🏠 Interior Protection
Drip Your Faucets: Allow a very thin stream of water (about the thickness of a pencil lead) to run from both hot and cold taps. Moving water is much harder to freeze.
Open Cabinet Doors: Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow warm air from the house to circulate around the pipes under the sink.
Maintain Consistent Heat: Set your thermostat to at least 55°F (13°C), even if you are leaving the house. For older homes with poor insulation, 65°F is safer.
Seal the Gaps: Check for drafts in the basement or crawlspace. Use caulk or foam to seal holes where pipes enter through exterior walls.
🌳 Exterior & Garage Prep
Disconnect Hoses: Remove all garden hoses from outdoor spigots. A connected hose can trap water in the faucet, causing it to freeze and burst inside the wall.
Cover Outdoor Taps: Use foam faucet covers or wrap spigots in heavy towels secured with duct tape.
Close Garage Doors: If you have water lines in your garage, keep the big door closed as much as possible to retain heat.
🚨 In Case of Emergency
Know Your Main Shut-Off: Locate your main water shut-off valve now. If a pipe bursts, turning this valve off immediately is the only way to stop the flooding.
If a Pipe Freezes: If you turn on a tap and only a trickle comes out, keep the faucet open and apply gentle heat (like a hair dryer) to the frozen section. Never use an open flame.
