Five Tips for Starting Your Own Cleaning Business: 🧽 🧹 🪣 🫧
I’ve learned a lot over the years, and if I could give new cleaners a few pieces of advice, it would be this:
1️⃣ Be honest about your experience.
You are not going to learn everything in six months. In fact, you won’t learn everything in six years. Experience comes from time in the field—working in different homes, solving different problems, and navigating different client personalities.
And here’s the thing: if you tell a client you have 10 years of experience, they’re going to expect you to show up with 10 years of experience. They’re going to expect the knowledge, confidence, problem-solving skills, and professionalism that comes with a decade in the industry.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being new. Every successful cleaner started somewhere. Be honest about where you are in your journey, continue learning, and let your work speak for itself as your experience grows.
2️⃣ Respect your fellow cleaners. 👏😮💨
Don’t come into the pond thinking it’s a competition to eat.
There is plenty of work out there for everyone. You don’t have to be rude, catty, or tear down another cleaner to build yourself up.
Some of the best opportunities you could have in this industry could come from relationships with other cleaners.
We refer jobs to one another, cover each other when schedules get crazy, share knowledge, and help each other grow.
A strong network will take you much further than drama ever will.
Support goes a lot further than competition. ❤️
3️⃣ Be transparent about your goals. 🗣️
If your goal is to grow a company with employees and crews, tell your clients from the beginning.
Some clients prefer working with a solo cleaner, and that’s perfectly okay, but if your vision is to build a business that grows beyond yourself, setting those expectations early helps avoid confusion later.
4️⃣ Set boundaries and stick to them. 👌
You are the boss.
That means you’re responsible for your schedule, your policies, your pricing, and deciding what you’re comfortable doing.
Don’t let anyone pressure you into work that makes you uncomfortable or doesn’t align with your business. It’s okay to say no.
5️⃣ Understand that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. 🍵
And that’s okay.
Not every client is going to be your ideal client, and you’re not going to be the ideal cleaner for every client.
Sometimes personalities don’t mesh, expectations don’t align, or it’s simply not the right fit.
Don’t take it personally.
The right clients will find you.
At the end of the day, building a successful cleaning business isn’t about being the biggest or the fastest.
It’s about being consistent, professional, and staying true to yourself while serving your clients well.
