Today, people know this building as Sig Samuels Dry Cleaning.

Families walk through our doors every day, trusting us with garments that mark some of life’s biggest moments.

Nearly a century ago, this same building witnessed a moment of incredible courage and heartbreaking loss.

As we reflect on its history this October, we’re reminded that buildings don’t just hold businesses—they hold stories.

We’re honored to continue serving the Atlanta community from a place with such a remarkable past, and we’re grateful to everyone who has been part of its story over the last century.

According to a detailed account when the two robbers-
Later identified as George Harsh and Richard Gallogly entered the pharmacy and announced a holdup, Willard Smith immediately drew a pistol. A gun fight followed. Harsh shot Willard Smith in the chest. Smith shot Harsh in the hip.

Bottles of ginger ale shattered, behind the pharmacist counter. A 14 year-old delivery boy for the pharmacy named James Stevens, who had been sleeping in the window seat,fled the store and lived to be a witness.

George Harsh and Richard Gallogly fled from the scene.

Willard passed away from his injuries a few days later.

But the story didn’t end there.

The wound suffered by George Harsh created an urgent problem. He needed medical attention, but they couldn’t easily explain how he was shot.

Harsh and his companion sought help from an acquaintance who summoned a physician. They hastily struggled to discard of his bloody clothing. They overlooked a pair of blood stain trousers with a bullet hole.
This item was later discovered by a detective who was searching the apartment. Ironically, a clothing label from a local dry cleaners was inside the trousers. The dry cleaner identified George Harsh as the customer who owned those trousers.

Sometimes, history is hidden in the places we pass every day.

Before he became part of Atlanta history, Willard Smith was a well educated, up-and-coming young pharmacist.

At just 24 years old, he was working at the neighborhood pharmacy that once occupied this building. He was the son of Dr. C. O. and Mary L. Smith, a husband to Marry Bell Smith and someone known for serving his community.

When armed robbers who had already committed seven robberies and killed one other person entered the pharmacy that October night, Willard made an extraordinary choice.

He chose to fight back.

It was a decision that would cost him his life—but one that would also help bring an end to a violent crime spree affecting Atlanta.

Atlanta businesses were on high alert on an October evening in 1928.

The building that now houses Sig Samuels was a neighborhood pharmacy, McRoberts Drug serving the growing Midtown community.

At 11:15 pm, two armed men entered the store intending to rob it.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution labeled them the Atlanta thrill killers, because they appear to be targeting businesses for money and alcohol.

What happened next would make newspaper headlines across Atlanta and change countless lives forever.

Instead of surrendering, one young pharmacist made a split-second decision that would define his legacy.

As Halloween approaches, we thought we’d share a different kind of story—one that’s not fiction, but a real piece of Atlanta history.

Most people know our building as Sig Samuels Dry Cleaning, but long before garments were pressed here, these walls were home to a neighborhood pharmacy.

Nearly 100 years ago, that pharmacy became the scene of a tragedy that made headlines across Atlanta and forever became part of this building’s history.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing the true story of what happened at 906 Monroe Drive in October 1928.

It’s a story of courage, community, and one young man who refused to back down.
