Welcome to the sewer. This is where many of those big American roaches live before they decide they’d like to become your unexpected houseguests.

The good news? You can make your home a lot less inviting:

✅ Make sure your doors and windows seal tightly.
✅ Run water through every sink, bathtub, shower, and floor drain at least once a week—especially in unused bathrooms. Water keeps the drain trap sealed, helping prevent roaches from traveling up through the plumbing.
✅ Fix gaps and cracks around utility lines and exterior entry points.

Remember, seeing one of these doesn’t necessarily mean your house is dirty. These roaches often wander in from outside or the sewer system looking for food, moisture, or shelter.

🕷️ Big doesn’t always mean dangerous!

This time of year, I relocate more orb weaver spiders than just about any other spider. They may be large, and they can definitely surprise you, but they’re actually one of the good guys.

Orb weavers are excellent at catching mosquitoes, flies, moths, and other flying insects. While they can bite, they’re not aggressive and almost never do. In fact, they’re much more likely to run away or drop from their web than defend themselves. In over 20 years of pest control, I’ve relocated countless orb weavers and have never been bitten by one.

So before you grab the bug spray, remember that not every spider is a pest. Sometimes the best solution is simply moving them to a safer spot where they can keep doing what they do best.
