Working in the bee yard, finally have time to get things back up and running. Goal is 3 of the 4 hives and start some bee hives on my acre lot in Levy county. Will sacrifice some honey collection to increase the number of hives this year.

We Will be adding 2 more bee hives to the yard in late February or early March, with a little luck I might be able to get some honey from them this year. Got a little more work to do on the hives and then paint them. Let’s hope for favorable weather this spring.

Keith and I will be judging the honey show tomorrow at the North Florida Fair in Tallahassee Florida. This is the second year we have been asked to judge the show, we had a great time last year and met some great people. I know many of the beekeepers were hit hard during the recent hurricane, but I hope they will be able to get out and have a good time and have some entries in the show. Following pictures are from last years show. Watch for pictures from this years show.

Just check the hives, they look like they have lots of honey stored for the winter, one hive may need a little help. Saw some SHB in the hives but they will die out during the winter. I want to add 2 more hives in the spring.

Bees bearding, this is one way they regulate the temperature in the hive. They will fan the opening. Usually in the evening til late in the night. You see this more when the temperatures are high along with the humidity. This is not to be confused with swarming.

Capped brood from one of my newly started hives. Look at the great laying pattern the queen is responsible for.
