Klean Vents Prevent House Fires Dirty Dryer Vents cause 15,500 house fires every year in the United States.

These fires also cause hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and are responsible for 31 deaths annually. The Consumer Product Protection Agency publishes these statistics every year, but who reads them? Sadly, most people learn how important it is to keep their dryer vent cleaned from a Fire Fighter (not the person you want teaching you this). Protect yourself by having your dryer vent professionally cleaned once a year.

Save Money With Spin Cycle Setting:

One of the best things you can do (and easiest) to save money is to set your washing machine's spin cycle to "High," Not every washing machine has this capability, but most do. If yours does, set your washing machine's spin cycle to the MAX setting. Why?

If your clothes are dripping wet when you put them in the dryer, your dryer will have to work overtime to dry them! Considering the fact that your dryer uses 220V of electricity to operate and your washing machine only uses half of that (110V) it's cheaper to have your washing machine drench out your clothes with the spin cycle on "high" than it is for your dryer to dry them!

Set your washing machine spin cycle to "high" and use the money you save for something more fun than washing and drying your clothes!

A Short Story You Should Read:

One day, two very good friends of mine got married and purchased a cute little townhouse to begin their lives. They bought furniture and had hardwood floors installed! They were really excited about their new home and I was invited to their house warming party!

Their place was super cute (the floors were gorgeous). Two weeks after the house warming party, the rubber hose that connects the washing machine to the faucet - burst. Unfortunately, both of my friends were at work when this happened and water poured out onto the floor until they got home that day. Their house was FLOODED.

That night I got a phone call from one of my friends. He was really upset about his house and the water everywhere. "What are we going to do," he said? I said, "You are going to call your insurance company." They did.

$8,000 dollars in damage. They needed the floors redone and quite a bit of drywall needed to be ripped out and redone too. It was a disaster. Fortunately, this will never happen to them again because they now use steel washing machine hoses, not rubber ones.

You can purchase steel washing machine hoses from Home Depot or Lowes. They are easy to install. All you need is a wrench and a strong arm. Remove the rubber hoses and install the steel ones. Be certain to ensure the connections are as tight as possible when installing your new hoses (so they don't leak). Voila!

If being on a first-name basis with your insurance companies claim's department isn't something you would like to experience, change your washing machine hoses to steel ones (if you haven't already).

Why should you have your dryer vent professionally cleaned?

Did you know that a dirty dryer vent (see photo) is a fire hazard and it also costs you more money to dry your clothes when your dryer vent is dirty? It's a fact. This article explains the basics.

If you aren't having your dryer vent professionally cleaned once a year, then you are telling the Universe that you like to waste money and that fires don't scare you. If that's you - stay away from me lol. I'm trying to make this humorous, but it isn't that "funny of a subject." People get hurt every year by fires caused by overheating dryers. It's not cool.

Having your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year is recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (visit their website for the stats), and it's a smart thing to do.

Here's how disaster occurs:

1. Your dryer vent becomes dirty or clogged with lint (which happens over time) and now your dryer can’t expel moist air efficiently (it can’t breathe).

2. One day, you turn the dryer on and it starts doing what it knows how to do - heat the wet air.

3. The dryer's fan is supposed to draw that hot air and expel it from your home via the vent.

4. If the dryer's vent is dirty or clogged, there's a serious concern. The moist, hot air that is supposed to be expelled can't go anywhere (or doesn't get expelled fast enough)

5. The dryer then begins to get hotter and hotter.

6. This not only makes your dryer more prone to overheating and causing a fire, but it will also cost you a small fortune every single year because it takes longer to dryer your clothes.

The SCARY PART:

Dryer lint is extremely flammable (did you know that?) Survivalists recommend bringing some lint with you when you go camping. It makes the most incredible fire starter! It stinks (I've done it) but it works. Lint ignites like a champion!

Try it yourself. Post a video of yourself using dryer lint to light a fire and be sure to share it with us so we can post it on our page! Fun! Hopefully, you've had your dryer vent cleaned already and you aren't sending us a video of your house in flames. We don't want to see that, which is why we do what we do (Klean Vents)

The Money Part:

Your dryer happens to be an energy beast (it's plugged into a 220v power source and it loves power). Your clothes will dryer quicker when you have your dryer vent professionally cleaned. The better your dryer can expel the moist air (without being slowed down or blocked by lint) the faster your clothes will dry!

See our post on Sensor Dry to learn more about this feature and how to keep the sensors clean - which you need to do periodically.

RECAP:

A clean dryer vent won’t just keep you safe by preventing one of the leading causes of house fires, it will also save you money! What’s not to love about that?

Dry Sense Technology (cleaning sensors):

Making sure your dryer’s moisture sensor is clean and working properly is a great way to ensure your dryer is using energy efficiently. This can save you a lot of money!

Typically, the moisture sensor in your dryer consists of two metal bars mounted on a black plate (see photo). You can find them inside your dryer's drum (just stick your head in there and look for them - you can't miss them (see picture).

All you need to do once you've located the sensor is take a damp cloth and wipe them clean! You can also use the scrubby side of a sponge or even a Brillo pad to scrub them clean if they are coated with dried lint (this is rare, but it can happen)

With the sensors clean, your dryer will shut off when the clothes are dry rather than stay on because you told it to stay on for however long you set it for.

Be sure to keep the dryer's sensors clean and give Dry Sense Technology a try! You’ll be saving money in no time!

Prevent Phantom Loads:

Another great way to save money on your monthly electric bill is to search your home for “phantom loads.” In some cases, eliminating these phantom loads can save you as much as 10% on your monthly electric bill! A good place to start looking for these is with your washer and dryer.

To see if your washer and dryer are drawing power when they are not in use (known as a phantom load), you will need to use a watt-meter. You can purchase a watt-meter at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Simply plug the watt-meter into the wall and then plug your dryer into the meter. If you see the meter registering power usage…you have a phantom load concern. If your dryer is using power when it is not in use - you are wasting money.

To solve this problem, plug your dryer into a power strip and then plug the power strip into the wall. Use the power strip as a “shut off” when your dryer is not in use! That’s money in the bank! See ya phantom loads!
