These past couple weeks I have been helping clients with the huge undertaking of cleaning up after the big dust storm with winds that were insane!
Cleaning up after a big dust storm can be a daunting task, but it’s essential to ensure that your home and surroundings return to normal. Here’s a step-by-step guide to make the process more manageable:
1. ‼️Assess the Damage‼️: Once the storm has passed, first assess the extent of the dust accumulation. Dust will likely have settled everywhere, from windowsills and furniture to outdoor areas. It’s important to evaluate both interior and exterior spaces to gauge how much cleaning is needed.
2. ⚠️Start with Outdoor Cleanup⚠️: Begin by clearing your outdoor spaces. Sweep or use a leaf blower to clear dust from driveways, sidewalks, and porches. If the storm was intense, the dust may have clogged gutters, so inspect and clear them to prevent water damage.
3. 🌿Ventilate the Area🌿: Open windows and doors to air out your home and allow fresh air to circulate. If the outside air quality is still poor, keep windows closed, but use fans to help push out the stale, dusty air inside. Make sure to shut off HVAC systems to avoid spreading dust through your ventilation system.
4.🫧 Dusting and Wiping🫧: Dust will be everywhere, so begin wiping down all surfaces. Use a damp cloth or microfiber dusters to capture the dust instead of just pushing it around. Start high (ceiling fans, shelves, light fixtures) and work your way down (tables, counters, baseboards).
5. ✨️Vacuuming✨️: Dust storms often leave a fine layer of dust on floors. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to suck up the dust. For carpets, a deep clean may be required, while hard floors can be wiped down after vacuuming.
6. 🌟Clean Air Filters🌟: Dust storms can clog air filters quickly. Replace or clean HVAC and air purifier filters, and consider checking filters in any other appliances like dehumidifiers or air conditioning units.
7. 🚿Wash Fabric Items🚿: Dust tends to settle on fabric surfaces like curtains, bedding, and upholstery. Wash any washable items and vacuum or wipe down furniture. For items that can’t be washed, consider using a fabric-safe vacuum attachment or taking them to a professional cleaner.
8. 🫧Check and Clean Appliances🫧: Dust can find its way into kitchen appliances, electronics, and other devices. Be sure to wipe down the exteriors and, if possible, clean vents and filters inside refrigerators, ovens, or fans.
9. 💪Prevent Future Dust Accumulation💪: After a big dust storm, you might want to consider adding extra measures to prevent dust from entering your home. Installing weather stripping around doors, sealing windows properly, and using air purifiers can help reduce future dust infiltration.
