I want to say something tonight that has been weighing heavily on me.

This isn’t about competition. This isn’t about who has the biggest shop, the nicest equipment, the lowest prices, or the most customers.

This is about PEOPLE.

A few weeks ago, I met a detailer who had been working for another shop for $20 per vehicle.

Sometimes that vehicle took four hours.

That’s $5 an hour.

If it took eight hours, that’s $2.50 an hour.

Think about that.

This person wasn’t lazy. He wasn’t looking for a handout. He was trying to get back on his feet. Trying to keep his electricity on. Trying to pay his water bill. Trying to put food in his refrigerator.

And somebody looked at his situation and saw an opportunity for cheap labor.

Shame on you.

So what did I do?

I hired him. And I paid him more.

Because PEOPLE HAVE VALUE.

And I’m going to say something else that may make a few people uncomfortable.

I see some of these cars posted on Facebook. I see people celebrating the unbelievable deal they received somewhere else.

That’s fine. Stay with them.

But understand what you may actually be supporting.

If a company can give you that incredibly cheap detail because the person doing the physical labor is being paid next to nothing, you didn’t find some magical great deal.

Somebody else paid the difference.

You saved a buck.

Your electricity is on.

There’s food in your refrigerator.

Your bills are paid.

And you’re celebrating how little you spent while the person who spent hours sweating over your vehicle may still be struggling to put food on HIS table.

Let’s all clap because you got a great deal.

But was it really a great deal?

That’s the question we should be asking ourselves.

Because humanity isn’t supposed to be:

“As long as I got mine, who cares what happened to the other guy?”

Being a decent human being means sometimes looking beyond yourself.

It means understanding that the person cleaning your car has bills too.

He has electricity too.

He has groceries to buy too.

He may have children waiting at home too.

He has a life beyond your vehicle.

Doing the right thing still matters.

I remember when my wife and I started Makai’s Detailing out of our house.

My wife wasn’t standing on the sidelines screaming:

“Take another car!”
“Work another five hours!”
“Make more money!”

She was beside me.

She picked up a towel and helped.

There’s a huge difference between being someone’s cheerleader and actually being SUPPORTIVE.

Sometimes I see pictures online celebrating somebody’s “hustle,” but I look at the person doing the work and see someone who appears physically and mentally exhausted.

Stop glorifying exhaustion.

If your husband or wife is working themselves into the ground trying to provide for the family, bring them some water.

Pick up a towel.

Ask what you can do.

And sometimes have enough compassion to say:

“You’ve done enough today. Let’s go home.”

Customers, there’s another side of this conversation.

Professional detailing isn’t just soap and water.

You’re paying for someone’s:

TIME.
EXPERIENCE.
TRAINING.
EQUIPMENT.
CHEMICALS.
INSURANCE.
OVERHEAD.
CERTIFICATIONS.
PHYSICAL LABOR.
AND CRAFTSMANSHIP.

Most importantly, you’re paying another human being a fair price for honest work.

We started Makai’s at our house.

Then came Altus.

Then Lawton/Fort Sill.

And now we’re preparing to open Elk City.

PEOPLE BUILD COMPANIES.

So to every detailer sweating in a driveway, working inside a shop, running a mobile rig, or trying to build something from nothing:

YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN $5 AN HOUR.

Know your worth.

To business owners:

PAY PEOPLE LIKE THEIR WORK MATTERS.

To customers:

UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR “GREAT DEAL” SHOULDN’T COME AT THE EXPENSE OF SOMEONE ELSE’S ABILITY TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILY.

And to spouses:

SUPPORT THE PERSON—NOT JUST THE PAYCHECK.

At the end of this life, nobody is going to care how cheaply you got your car detailed.

What matters is how we treated people along the way.

Humanity is about more than making sure your own lights stay on and your own refrigerator is full.

It’s about understanding that the person standing next to you is trying to keep their lights on too.

Do the right thing—even when doing the right thing costs you a little more.

That’s integrity.

That’s humanity.

And that’s the kind of company we’re going to continue building.

Getting this beautiful Chevy Bel-Air ready for the big Vernon car show happening this weekend!

We just finished a full two-step paint correction to restore the depth, clarity, and shine of the paint. We also applied a double-stacked 5-year Gtechniq ceramic coating for long-lasting protection and an incredible finish.

The coating will now cure for the next 12–15 hours before we get this classic back to the customer first thing tomorrow morning and ready for the show!
