Many homes throughout New Mexico that were built in the era of about 1960-1990 have in-floor duct systems that are erosion-prone. A large number of homes with in-floor ducting contain a material called Sono-Tube. It is a hardened cardboard that is hard-pressed into multiple layers with a strictly cosmetic tin foil lining on the inside. The duct systems contain galvanized steel junctions and elbows. However, a cardboard duct system that has been exposed to run off from the roof is very prone to deterioration.
