You know what separates a lawn that looks "fine" from one that looks genuinely sharp? It's not the mower. It's the edges.

W**d whacking and edging are the finishing touches that most people skip — and it shows. A freshly mowed lawn without clean edges looks like a good haircut with no lineup. Technically fine, but missing that polished look.

Here's where edging and w**d whacking make the biggest difference:

Along sidewalks and driveways — A clean vertical edge where grass meets concrete is instantly noticeable. It creates definition and makes the whole yard look intentional.

Around fence lines and posts — These are the spots your mower can't reach. Overgrown grass around fences makes the entire property look neglected.

Around garden beds — String trimming along bed edges keeps grass from creeping into mulched areas and maintains that crisp separation.

Around trees and landscape features — Neat circles around tree bases look clean and protect the trunk from mower damage.

Pro tip: When w**d whacking, hold the trimmer so it cuts at the same height as your mowed lawn — don't scalp the edges down to dirt. Scalped edges turn brown and invite w**ds. The goal is a uniform height with a clean vertical cut along hard surfaces.

Every time we service a property, edging and trimming are included — not an add-on. It's part of doing the job right. If your lawn could use that finishing touch on a weekly basis, reach out here or call/text 518-954-5115 and we'll set you up with a free estimate.

"When should I put down fertilizer?" — easily the most common question I get from homeowners in the Capital District this time of year. And the answer is probably not what you expect.

Most people want to fertilize the second the snow melts. It feels productive. But in our area, going too early actually wastes your money and can do more harm than good.

Here's the timeline that works for Albany/Capital District lawns:

Early-to-mid April (right now): If you're overseeding bare patches, use a starter fertilizer that's high in phosphorus to help new roots establish. This is the one exception to going early.

Late April to early May: This is the sweet spot for your first general application of the season. By now, the grass is actively growing, soil temps are consistently above 55°F, and the plant can actually USE the nutrients you're putting down. A balanced slow-release fertilizer is your best bet here.

Important NY State note: New York prohibits lawn fertilizer containing phosphorus UNLESS a soil test shows your lawn actually needs it. And no lawn fertilizer at all is allowed between December 1 and April 1. So if you're reading this on April 1st or later, you're in the clear for the season.

What to look for on the bag: For spring, a fertilizer with a ratio like 20-0-10 or similar (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) works well for established lawns. Save the heavier nitrogen applications for the fall — that's when cool-season grasses benefit most.

If you'd rather skip the guesswork, we offer fertilization programs tailored to Capital District lawns. We handle the timing, the products, and the application — you just watch the lawn thicken up. Drop us a message or text/call us 518-954-5115 for details.

I hear this a lot from folks in the Capital District: "I can mow my own lawn — why would I pay someone?"

Totally fair question. And honestly, if you enjoy being outside and have the time, mowing your own lawn is great. But here's what most people don't factor in when they do the math:

The real cost of DIY lawn care:

A decent mower runs $300–$600 (and needs maintenance, gas, blade sharpening, and eventual replacement)

A string trimmer, edger, and blower add another $200–$400

Mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing a typical Capital District yard takes 1–2 hours per week

Over a 26-week mowing season, that's 26–52 hours of your time. At even a modest hourly value of $25/hr, that's $650–$1,300 in time alone

And that's just mowing. It doesn't account for spring cleanup, fall cleanup, mulching, gutter cleaning, or any of the other seasonal work your property needs.

What a local pro gives you:

Consistent results on a reliable schedule — your lawn looks good every single week

Commercial-grade equipment that cuts better and faster than consumer gear

Expertise on mowing height, timing, and seasonal adjustments

Your weekends back

For most homeowners, professional lawn care ends up being surprisingly close in cost to DIY once you factor in equipment, maintenance, and your time. The difference is you get your Saturday back.

We're a local Capital District crew that offers everything from weekly mowing to full-property maintenance. If you've been on the fence, shoot us a message or call/text 518-954-5115 — we're happy to walk through what it would look like for your property. No pressure, no sales pitch.
