One thing that amazes me when we are trapping are the large earthworms we find when trapping!

Did you know a study in 2019 found that we have around 39 different species of earthworms in Oklahoma? And out of those 39, only 26 are natives!

Opossums might be slow and that might make you want to catch them by hand, but you might want to think about that again!

1. Virginia Opossum opossums can carry parasites such as fleas, ticks, mites, and lice that may spread to people or pets.
2. Opossums have very sharp teeth! Have you ever looked at them? When frightened or cornered, they may hiss, bare their teeth, and bite in self-defense.
3. Wild opossums can carry bacteria and diseases such as leptospirosis or salmonella through their urine, f***s, or saliva, making direct handling risky without proper protection.

If you have an opossum problem and don’t want to handle it, call The Wildlife Pros, we’ll handle it for you!

Have you ever seen a turtle lay their eggs!

One of our Wildlife Specialists stumbled on a mother turtle starting to lay her eggs.

1. Did you know female Red-eared Slider turtles can lay 2–30 eggs at a time depending on their size and age?
2. Did you know a female red-eared slider may lay multiple clutches in one season, sometimes up to 3 nests in a single summer?
3. Did you know the eggs are usually buried in soft soil or sand, often several inches underground, to help protect them from predators and drying out?
4. Did you know the temperature of the nest can influence whether the babies become male or female?
* Warmer nests usually produce more females.
* Cooler nests usually produce more males.
5. Did you know hatchlings sometimes stay underground through the winter and emerge in the spring instead of immediately leaving the nest?
6. Did you know raccoons, skunks, foxes, snakes, and even ants commonly dig up turtle nests to eat the eggs?
7. Did you know red-eared slider eggs are soft and leathery when first laid, not hard like chicken eggs?
8. Did you know baby sliders have a tiny “egg tooth” on their beak that helps them crack out of the egg? It falls off shortly after hatching.
9. Did you know red-eared sliders get their name from the bright red stripe behind each eye, not from their ears?
10. Did you know red-eared sliders are one of the most commonly kept pet turtles in the world and have become invasive in many countries after being released into the wild?

4 Facts About Skunks with Rabies!

1. Skunks are one of the primary wild carriers of rabies in many parts of the United States, especially in the central and western states. They are considered a major “rabies reservoir” species alongside raccoons, bats, and foxes.
2. A skunk with rabies may act very differently than normal. Common signs include:
* Aggression or unusual boldness
* Wandering during daylight
* Trouble walking or appearing drunk
* Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
* Unusual vocal sounds
3. Rabies spreads through saliva, usually from bites. A skunk does not have to spray you to transmit rabies — the real danger is being bitten or having infected saliva contact an open wound or eyes, nose, or mouth. Rabies
4. Not every skunk seen during the daytime has rabies. Mother skunks sometimes forage during the day, especially in spring when feeding young. Sick, injured, or disturbed skunks may also be active outside normal nighttime hours.

If you are going to trap a skunk yourself, be very careful, look for the signs of a skunk has rabies, wear the proper PPE.
