Hot honey bees

05/04/2022

It's that time of the year. SPRING....
WELL I THINK ITS SPRING
aside from the 30-40 degree Temps.
Soon it will hit 80 and as New Englanders we will all complain its too hot.

Well right around the corner honey bees will buzz, wasp queens will decide to officially come out of hibernation and carpenter bees will be flourishing. Celebrate July 4th with your favorite yellow jacket at that cookout
(What to look forward to!)

It's HOT... Crazy HOT....

The bugs love this weather!
These... are Honey Bees. They're our pollinating friends (and a necessity). It doesn't mean you want them living in your walls or play structures, though.
Bee Busters specializes in Honey Bee relocation.

-Without the source of honeybees, pollination of many plants, flowers, & fruits would not occur.
-Honeybees are β…œβ€ to ¾” long, & sting if provoked. An average hive can consist of 30,000 to 60,000 bees. A bee has 5 eyes, 6 legs, & 4 wings each. She is small, hairy, yellowish-brown in color, & can sometimes be dark brown or black as well. The bulk of the hive consists of infertile female workers; they forage for nectar & pollen, protect the hive against enemies, & produce wax and honey.
-The Honeybee flies about 15 miles per hour. The bee will visit 50-150 flowers during one collection trip.
-A Honeybee stings once & then dies. The stinger, which has a barb at the end of it, gets lodged in the victim & pulls apart her abdomen after she flies away. If stung, remove the stinger by scraping not by pulling; venom continue to pump until the stinger is removed.

It's INSTANT SUMMER!!! Then... it cools down a bit... then it warms up... The bugs??... love it!
The Honey Bees are out. The Yellow Jackets are moving in! The Wasps are buidling!

Keep an eye out for all of these as they're visiting you... Now!

-Yellowjacket is the common name for predatory social wasps living in colonies with workers, queens, & males (drones). Most are black with yellow stripes, but some include red markings, & some are black with white markings (the Bald-Faced Hornet, which is the black & white marking type, is a sub-type of Yellow Jacket wasp).

-They can be roughly β…œβ€ to 2” long, depending on the species, with queens and drones about 25% longer.

-There are at least 14 different varieties of Yellow Jackets in New England alone. They can nest β€œanywhere” -in the ground, bush, house exterior, eves, soffit, tree, in railroad ties, & the list goes on. An average nest can reach 4,000-6,000 by the end of the Summer, with each insect having the potential of multiple stings. A mature nest may typically have 2,000-6,000 cells and 1,000-4,000 + workers.

-Nests are seasonal, gray paper in nature with a condo structure inside covered by a thick papery substance for added protection. They form by scraping old or weathered wood & secreting this substance back at their nest site.

Carpenter Ants! Here they come... marching along.

-They're among the largest ants. There are several species that may be found infesting homes and other buildings. Winged queen ants may be as large as one inch.
-Outdoors, they feed on living and dead insects. Indoors, they feed on meats, syrup, honey, sugar, jelly, and other sweets. Carpenter ants DO NOT eat wood. They remove wood as they create galleries and tunnels.
-They nest in moist wood including rotting trees, tree roots, tree stumps, and logs or boards lying on or buried in the ground. They can also nest in moist or decayed wood inside buildings.
-Carpenter ants damage wood by excavating and creating galleries and tunnels. They are clean, and they do not contain sawdust or other debris, with a well-sanded appearance. It is common to find carpenter ants in homes during spring. You may also see carpenter ant swarms. When carpenter ant nests are indoors, mating swarms become trapped inside. Finding large numbers of winged ants indoors is a sure sign that an indoor nest exists.

Find out more by visiting https://www.bee-busters.com/bees
-Resemble Bumble Bees, but the abdomen is black and shiny.
-Drill holes that are β…œ inch in diameter into wood.
-Common drilling areas are decks, eaves, and sidings of houses and other buildings.
-Can be a nuisance to homeowners and cause structural damage to affected areas that they live in.
-Can more often affect unfinished wood, older painted wood that is stained or waterproofed, and can drill into furniture.
-Will not leave you alone when provoked; queen will match your every move and are very territorial and will defend their nest aggressively (fight to the death).
-Bees like to hover in one place for long periods of time. - resembling hummingbird activity.
-Have the ability to travel long distances and visit many different flower types.
-Are mainly active at dawn and dusk during the summer.
-A Carpenter Bee infestation is often first detected by finding large amounts of sawdust on the ground below the
area being drilled.

It's the first day of Spring... and guess what the Buzz is?

Flying pests are going to start popping out and looking for new homes and places to build their nests. So keep an eye out and let us know if they find... you!

Pictured is a Bald Faced Hornet.... Bzzzz
Their Nests are found in trees or shrubs, and sometimes on buildings. Often 12-inches or more in diameter. They become very large by the end of the summer and can have 800 to 1000 of these guys in them. Ack!
They're very aggressive and will _attack_ without being provoked, so don't go after them yourself. Call in the experts... Bee Busters.

Confronting your family and leaving them upset is not the goal. Keep it positive, and you might be surprised by what happens next.
