One of our residential builds, from the first excavation to the finished pool.

First the dig and the block walls, then the waterproofing going onto the structure, then the tiled finish and deck. Waterproofing is the part you can’t see once the pool is tiled and filled, which is why it’s worth knowing about before you build.

A lot of people picture pool maintenance as one person with a net on a Saturday. A home with a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room is a different job.

The week is split into four visits by the same team. The pool and jacuzzi water gets tested and corrected. The sauna heater and ventilation get looked at. The steam room generator and drains get checked. Small faults get found while they’re still cheap.

Why spread it out? Water chemistry changes daily, and heat and steam equipment tends to fail quietly. A monthly visit usually finds the problem after you do.

There’s a point where servicing stops working. Hollow tiles, repeat leaks, and equipment that was never designed to run together are the usual signs. Catch it early and a renovation is a scoped job. Wait, and it becomes an emergency.

Which would you rather push across your pool floor: a longer, heavier sweeper with lower brushes, or a lighter one that’s easier to handle?

Before we quote a renovation, we check five things:

The shell: hollow-sounding tile, cracks, movement at joints, staining at the waterline
Water loss: is it leaking, and where exactly
The plant room: age of the pumps, filters, heaters and steam generator, and whether anyone can reach them to service them
Electrical and bonding: who wired what, and when
Drainage and levels: where water goes between one system and the next

Then you get one of three answers: repair, partial renovation, or rebuild. In writing, with a scope, before any work starts.

Planning four systems together isn't really about how they look side by side. It's about what's underneath.

Plumbing, electrical, and drainage planned once for pool, sauna, jacuzzi, and steam bath work differently than four separate installers each working around whatever the last one left behind. Site layout accounts for where a sauna will actually go before the pool deck is poured, not squeezed into leftover space years later.

One coordinated build also means one period of disruption to your property, not three or four spread across however many years it takes to add each piece separately.

This is engineering before it's aesthetics. The look follows from getting that part right.

Kickboards aren't safety equipment, and it's worth saying that plainly. They're a learning aid: they help beginners and children build kick technique and water confidence. Learning to swim is part of water safety over the long run, but a kickboard doesn't keep anyone safe on its own, and it never replaces supervision. Same line as everything else this month.
