Is your favorite outfit wearing out because you wear it often—or because you are washing it the wrong way?
Clothes do not always lose their shape, fade, or stretch simply because they are old. Sometimes, the way they are washed is quietly shortening their lifespan. 🧺
Here are five types of fabric that people often care for incorrectly.
1. Silk
❌ Scrubbing vigorously, using hot water, wringing, or drying in direct sunlight
You may think that stronger washing means cleaner clothes, but it can cause silk to lose its shine, fade, and damage its delicate fibers.
✅ Always check the care label first. If the garment is washable, use cold water and a mild detergent. Items labeled “Dry Clean Only” should be handled by a professional.
2. Wool and Knitted Fabrics
❌ Washing in warm water, using a high-spin cycle, or hanging while wet
Heat and friction can cause the fabric to shrink, while hanging a wet garment may stretch it out of shape.
✅ Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle, avoid wringing, and lay the garment flat to dry.
3. Denim
❌ Washing after every wear with hot water and a high-spin cycle
This can make the color fade faster, wear down the fabric, and cause the garment to lose its original shape.
✅ If it is not stained or smelly, denim does not need to be washed after every wear. When washing, turn it inside out, use cold water, and air-dry it in the shade.
4. Linen
❌ Tumble-drying on high heat until completely dry
High heat may cause linen to shrink, become stiff, and develop wrinkles that are more difficult to remove.
✅ Use a gentle wash cycle, remove the garment while it is still slightly damp, reshape it before drying, and iron it while a little moisture remains.
5. Activewear and Spandex
❌ Using too much fabric softener and drying on high heat
Fabric softener can coat the fibers and reduce their moisture-wicking performance, while heat may damage the fabric’s elasticity.
✅ Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, avoid fabric softener, and air-dry in the shade.
Remember, garments may contain blended fabrics or have different finishes. The care label is therefore the most reliable guide for keeping each item in good condition. ✨
