In the world of bugs, termites often get a bad rap – and for a good reason. This group of insects is well known for their ability to cause extensive damage to homes and other structures by eating away at wood. But how much do you really know about them? Read on for an introduction to termites, including the types found in different areas, signs of an infestation, and ways to identify them.
Termites are members of the order Isoptera, otherwise more commonly known as “social” insects, due to their highly organized colonies with specific castes among its workers, soldiers, and reproductive classes. While there are over 3,000 species worldwide, only seven are considered “true” or “primary” termites that can cause significant damage to wooden structures.
Termite infestations can be difficult to detect until major damage has already been done due to the secretive nature of these insects. Common signs include mud tubes connecting soil or wood to the structure, piles of discarded wings from swarmers trying to establish new colonies; damaged or hollow-sounding wood; visible swarmers; and moisture spots on walls or floors caused by leaking colonies inside structural wood.
Once termites have moved into your home or business, they can be difficult, if not impossible, to control without professional help due to their typically advanced stages before detected. If you think you may have a termite problem, contact Termite Tech today
