How exactly you clean a mirror?

1. With warm water, scrub off obvious streaks and staining with a sponge, not a cloth.
2. Dip crumpled newspaper in a solution of 1 part white vinegar, 5 parts warm water.
3. Wipe in big circles, moving left to right, top to bottom. Switch newspaper pages as needed.
4. Wipe with a dry piece of newspaper, and smile at your streak-free mirror.

Why do it? Mirrors are the most looked-at item in the house!

How, exactly, do you clean a toaster?

A Crumb-Free Toaster
1. Unplug it, always.
2. Remove the crumb drawer and wash it in the sink with hot soapy water. (Hint: In upright toasters, there’s often a plastic tabbed drawer hidden at the bottom.)
3. Tip the toaster over a garbage pail and gently shake it out. Crumbs from years ago will emerge.
4. With a damp old toothbrush, carefully scrub off remaining grime and stubborn crumbs from the heat coils. Shake it out again.
5. Let the toaster dry out completely (I can’t stress this enough for safety purposes) before plugging it in again.
Why do it? Dirty toasters are not only inefficient, but also a fire hazard.

You must use specialty cleaners for different surfaces in your home.

It seems like there’s a separate cleaner for everything from stainless steel appliances to mirrors to granite countertops. They’re expensive and not usually necessary. For most tasks, a microfiber cloth without any additional cleaning solution works well. Use a slightly damp one for dusting furniture and floors or getting smears off stainless steel. Use a dry one on mirrors. Microfiber can be used with a disinfectant product, too, if the surface is germy. Wash microfiber cloths in a separate load without fabric softener (which affects their absorbency) and let air-dry. But natural stone surfaces, like those made of marble and travertine, require special cleaners with the proper pH; check product labels to make sure you’re buying the most appropriate one.

Your washing machine is clean inside？

Not exactly. Germs that can make you sick are on dirty clothes, and they can lurk in your washer and transfer to other clothes in the same load—or to clothes in the next load, says Reynolds. Cleaning your washer weekly can reduce the spread of germs. Just run a cup of bleach in a hot cycle on the lowest water level (be greener by washing your whites with it). Two more tips: Never let wet laundry sit in the washer overnight because it can become a colony of breeding germs, and always dry clothes on high heat, which like washing in hot water, also helps kill germs.

Natural cleaners work as well as chemical ones! :)

Lemon juice and vinegar mixtures are fine for scrubbing off surface dirt on tile backsplashes, for example. But they’re only so-so at killing germs. Full-strength vinegar kills some bacteria and mold, but it won’t kill flu viruses. When someone in the house is sick, protect the rest of the family with an EPA-registered disinfectant, which is tested for germ-killing effectiveness. Viruses can survive on surfaces for as long as eight hours, so wipe down door k***s, faucet handles and other hands-on spots with this disinfectant. If you absolutely don’t want to use disinfectants, homemade cleaners are better than nothing—just keep them off natural stone surfaces because they may damage them.

How to solve Water Rings on Wood?

Someone forgot to use a coaster (again), and now you have an unsightly water ring to show for it. Roberts’s secret for removing water marks from wood furniture? “Mix equal parts baking soda and white cream toothpaste. Dip a clean, white cloth into the mixture and gently buff the marks in a circular motion for a few minutes. Wipe clean and follow it with furniture polish.” If that doesn’t work, rub mayonnaise (yes, really!) on the stain and let it sit overnight. Wipe the spot with a dry towel the next morning and your hardwood coffee table will be spotless.

You think you did a great job cleaning the windows when hours later, they dry to reveal unsightly smudges, which can block sunlight. And your just-sprayed mirrors don’t look any better. Luckily, you may have all the ingredients for a better cleanser. For non-smearing mirrors or windows, try a combination of 1 gallon of water, ½ cup of vinegar, ½ cup of rubbing alcohol and about 2 squirts of dish soap. Put the solution on the glass and then broadly swipe a newspaper from side to side for a streak-free shine.

Stove tops can be nearly impossible to clean with elbow grease alone. Suggests a soak for your burner grates: Slip each one into a gallon-size, resealable plastic bag. Pour in ¼ cup liquid ammonia and seal the bag. The ammonia will break down what’s caked on—even grease. Five hours later, remove the grates and wipe them down with a clean wet, sponge. They’ll be as good as new. :)

Soap scum buildup on the walls of your shower and/or tub?

Soap scum is always the last thing on everyone’s to-do list. Why? Because it seems impossible to get it all off. Try using a microfiber cleaning cloth with a paste of 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (not bottled), 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup baking soda to scour the surfaces lightly. Or try using a nonabrasive scouring pad, like the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, sopping wet with your favorite cleaner (let the cleaner sit for 15 minutes before wiping down). To prevent scum from building back up and eliminate the need for weekly cleanings, use a squeegee to skim water and soap residue off walls after showers or baths.

Talk about a tedious job! Instead of wiping down slat by slat, which is incredibly time-consuming, blast through your blinds with these genius tips. First of all, don’t use cleaning products, which will only make the blinds streaky. Instead, “Use a microfiber cloth that’s barely, barely damp,” says Trotter. “Close the blinds flat and wipe side to side all the way from top to bottom. Then turn the lever to move the slats in the other direction. Wipe again from top to bottom. Now stand on the backside of the blind and do the same thing in both directions.”
