ETCHED COMPRESSED MARBLE
Agglomerated (compressed) marble tiles are a composite material produced by binding marble chips with formulated resin. Hence, its presence of calcium carbonate minerals in the compressed marble will response to acidic liquid in manner of blurring. This surface chemical corrosion is known as etching.
Polisher’s perspective, be to re-surface the stone with coarse abrasive to rid the affected corroded top layer. Thereafter, refining with sequential fine grit abrasives is essential to close up the pores of stone providing the treated surface a better resistant against future etching.
Users tip: Should opportunity present, down right at the moment upon realisation of etching, users should immediately clean/sponge up such acidic liquid spill. (Avoid big “swing” cleaning so to not widen the problem) With caution of slipping, then pour a layer of tap water over the surface, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before drying. This do-it-yourself procedure essentially neutralise the acidity hoping the etching is tone down or mild. If it isn’t visible, lucky you. Else a re-polishing treatment is required. Fingers crossed.
