🚨 Is “10H Coating” Just Marketing?

Almost every detailer talks about 9H or even 10H hardness.

But here’s a question very few people ask…

Who actually tested it?

Let’s look at the science.



📌 ASTM D3363-22 – The “9H” Pencil Hardness Test

This is the standard most coating brands use when advertising 9H hardness.

It works by scratching the coating with calibrated graphite pencils ranging from 6B (softest) to 9H (hardest).

If the coating resists the 9H pencil, it passes.

Simple.

But here’s the interesting part…

ASTM D3363-22 only goes up to a 9H pencil.

There is no 10H pencil in the ASTM D3363 standard.

So if a coating is advertised as 10H, it’s worth asking:

👉 Which recognised international test was used to verify that 10H claim?

Because it certainly wasn’t ASTM D3363.



📌 Why ASTM E384 Is More Meaningful

Rather than using a graphite pencil, ASTM E384 measures hardness with a precision diamond indenter under a controlled load.

Instead of marketing terms like “9H”, it produces an actual numerical hardness value, such as HV or MPa, allowing coatings to be compared objectively.

This test is widely used in:

It is far more repeatable, objective and scientifically meaningful than a simple pencil scratch test.



Hardness Isn’t Everything

The Bottom Line

A 9H pencil hardness rating simply means the coating resisted a 9H graphite pencil under specific test conditions.

It does not mean the coating is scratch-proof, has a Mohs hardness of 9, or is the hardest coating available.

And if someone claims 10H hardness, don’t just accept the number.

Ask:

“Which internationally recognised test standard certified that result?”
