These tiny insects transmit diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and more, causing over 700,000 deaths annually—some estimates suggest nearly one million.
Species like Aedes aegypti, Anopheles, and Culex are the main culprits, with malaria alone responsible for over 608,000 deaths and 249 million cases across 85 countries in 2022.
Their danger stems from acting as disease vectors, biting stealthily and carrying multiple pathogens.
Control measures like insecticide-treated bed nets and genetic modification are in play, but growing insecticide resistance calls for new approaches.
Until then, mosquitoes remain a silent, lethal threat.
