When Alexander the Great invaded India around 326 BC, he wasn’t just met by soldiers. He also encountered philosophers known as Brahmins, who rejected material wealth and lived with almost nothing. One of them boldly told Alexander, “You will only possess as much land as will cover your body.”

The words hit Alexander harder than any arrow. This was a man who conquered Persia, Egypt, and much of Asia, yet here stood a barefoot sage reminding him how little power truly meant in the face of mortality. It was a moment that stripped away the illusion of control that comes with conquest.

Stories say Alexander rode away in silence, unable to argue with such wisdom. He realized that no empire, no army, and no treasure could change that truth. In the end, every conqueror meets the same fate, and the earth they fought to own becomes their only home.

In 1823, American frontiersman Hugh Glass joined a fur-trading expedition through the harsh wilderness of what is now South Dakota. During the journey, he was viciously attacked by a grizzly bear, leaving him with broken bones, deep wounds, and barely clinging to life. Believing he wouldn’t survive, his companions took his equipment and left him behind to face the elements alone.

But Glass refused to give up. Crawling on the ground for weeks, surviving on roots and wild berries, he traveled more than 200 miles through unforgiving terrain to reach safety at Fort Kiowa. His sheer determination and will to live turned him into a living legend of the American frontier.

While parts of his ordeal may have been embellished over time, his story remains one of the greatest survival tales ever told. It later inspired the 2015 film The Revenant, where Leonardo DiCaprio portrayed his incredible struggle for life.

In 1190, the mighty Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa led his army on the Third Crusade, determined to reclaim Jerusalem. While crossing the Saleph River in modern-day Turkey, he entered the water still wearing his armor. The current was too strong, and he and his horse were swept away before his soldiers could save him.

Refusing to leave their emperor behind, his men preserved his remains in vinegar to transport him toward the Holy Land. They carried parts of him across miles, hoping to fulfill his wish to reach Jerusalem, but the journey proved impossible.

Centuries later, Barbarossa’s end became a cautionary tale of pride and persistence, a powerful ruler brought down not by battle but by the weight of his own armor.

In the late 1700s, American trader Timothy Dexter earned a reputation as both a fool and a genius. With little formal education but plenty of confidence, he constantly made bizarre business decisions that somehow turned into fortune. His rivals, tired of his success, decided to humiliate him by suggesting he ship coal to Newcastle, England, a city famous for its endless supply of coal. They expected him to lose everything.

But luck had other plans. When his ship reached England, a miners’ strike had stopped local production, creating a sudden shortage. Dexter sold his entire cargo for a massive profit, leaving his rivals speechless. What was meant to be a joke became one of his greatest victories.

This wasn’t his only stroke of luck. He once sent bed warmers to the Caribbean, and islanders bought them as molasses ladles. Another time, he shipped cats to the West Indies, where they were used to control rats, earning him another profit. Timothy Dexter’s life became a living reminder that sometimes, being underestimated is the best advantage a man can have.
