SUNDAY SCENE at Laba Box Laundry

The dryers hummed their slow, dependable hymn—an off-key choir of rotating metal and warm air. Sunlight pushed through the front windows in soft rectangles, catching floating dust like tiny dancers rehearsing for no one in particular.

Inside, the Sunday quiet held steady. A man in a white sat reading a mystery novel, pausing now and then to glance at the washer as if it might reveal the culprit before the book did.

A toddler in mismatched socks toddled past him, clutching a plastic dinosaur like a talisman. His mother folded shirts with the speed and precision of someone who has done this a thousand Sundays before.

Near the counter, two college students argued—not loudly, but passionately—over the proper way to separate laundry.
“You absolutely wash jeans with darks,” one insisted.
“That’s a myth propagated by Big Denim,” the other countered, jabbing at a pack of pretzels stuck in the coil.

A man entered, carrying a basket full of clothes that smelled faintly of lavender. She nodded a greeting to the room, the kind of nod that said, We’re all in this together—wrinkles, stains, and all.

The hum resumed, steady as a heartbeat.
