Artist Statement:
"Our ancestors were unable to express their thoughts throughout the colonial era of our country. If they do so, they will be tortured or killed by the higher-ups. This dilemma persisted until courage and bravery to stand up to oppression ignited in their hearts and minds. As seen through the lens of history, Balangay is an artifact that exemplifies how Filipinos succeeded in gaining the independence that everyone wished for. It was not only responsible for instilling nationalism, but it also had a significant impact on shaping our culture.
The art I created represents how I saw Balangay as a crucial part of how we came to enjoy the freedom we do now. The Balangay in the image depicts our country's progress toward its ultimate goal, freedom. The water signifies the language and communication that inspired our heroes to work harder and push themselves to achieve this goal. Some of these heroes are Dr. Jose Rizal (His novels), Andres Bonifacio (Cry in Pugad Lawin), Francisco Balagtas (writing of poems in Filipino instead of Spanish to show resistance), and EDSA revolution participants (demonstrating resistance of oppression). Regardless of how many times our ancestors' lips were sealed, they refused to give up, and all of their sacrifices were eventually paid off. The rising sun represents the bright future that lies ahead of us as we work to help our country flourish.
