The retail sector of New Zealand's tourism industry is gradually recovering, with visitor spend improving towards pre-pandemic levels. Sales of possum merino products are also improving; however, stock levels remain somewhat high throughout the supply chain (i.e. possum fibre, yarn, and finished product) so fibre demand is steady at the beginning of the season.
We have also seen a slight change in tourist and purchasing behaviour with fewer numbers and visitors looking at experiences instead of products. However, the low New Zealand dollar will mean more money in the tourist wallet.
Offshore demand is still lower than before Covid, and with current global conditions, significant short-term growth is unlikely. Opportunities for fur harvesters are expected to stay steady this season as the industry continues to gear up and manage some of these headwinds.
