A great result from last night I set 3 traps on a property that had lost 4 chickens the night before, a large male ferret, I’ve left all the traps there again, just in case 👍

I had a call for help today after 4 chickens killed overnight 😞 it was a bit of a rush to get some traps in place for tonight we just arrived back in Christchurch at 6pm after a few days in the Hawke’s Bay, 1 cage trap & 2 Doc traps baited with chicken 🤞

13 rabbits on a property tonight it was hard going they seemed very wary, I shot the same property 2 weeks ago & managed 23 rabbits, also spotted a rat running around with the thermal a great bonus 👍
That’s 175 rabbits from these two properties now 😲👍

Another female ferret caught overnight on the usual property on the Old West Coast Road, caught in the same double ended cage trap baited with Rabbit

Ferrets = 3

Rabbbits = 68
Hares = 2

Total so far 2026:
Rats = 330
Mice = 329
Hedgehog’s = 330
Possums = 63
Stoats = 0
Ferrets = 21
Weasels = 0
Rabbits = 491
Hares = 79

Totals since start January 2024:
Rats = 1087
Mice = 863
Hedgehog’s = 683
Possums = 199
Stoats = 2
Ferrets = 51
Weasels = 1

Rabbit/Hares since October 2025:
Rabbits = 785

Unfortunately all results not quite in for April despite 3 e mails going out, any other late ones I’ll tag onto next month

Thanks to everyone involved with Predator Free for making the time & effort to remove predators from the West Melton area.
I can’t believe how close the totals are for the top 3 this year, hedgehogs will tail off to nothing over the winter period as they prepare to hibernate

Keep your baits fresh in your traps ready for the influx of rodents that will be moving to somewhere near you 👍

A few weeks ago I was contacted by West Melton Cubs & Scouts group to have a chat to them about Predator Free & what I do, we arranged to meet up on Tuesday evening at the Cubs & Scouts hut near Yaldhurst, I took along quite a few different traps, some literature, pictures & a frozen Stoat, Ferret, they loved that bit 👍
After the talk we all got together making traps which were kindly donated to me after the event 👍

Can everyone involved with Predator Free West Melton please send in their trapping results for April please even if you haven’t caught anything 👍
Rats are definitely on the move coming to a place near you 😲
Check your traps & freshen up your bait, catch them before they get settled, rats bring in more rats 😮
