Our 'super hero' with young crocodile son Toby enjoyed an "absolutely divine" picnic (Emily's words, not ours) on a perfect summer's day on the shores of Lake Wanaka. The Butler had got up early that morning to get preparations underway. Lunch included a delicious, home-made spanokapita w. sweet chilli sauce, an organic garden salad adorned with fresh herbs & nasturtiums, freshly-baked ciabbata & dips, local Whitestone blue & tasty cheeses & fresh seasonal fruits, a bottle of chilled Rose, San Pelligrino sparking water and homemade Christmas cake & a thermos of tea to follow. While Emily, Toby, Matt & Malcolm enjoyed some well-deserved R & R and soaked up a little sunshine, the Butler and her team 'blitzed' Emily & Matt's house til it sparkled! Thank you Emily for your wonderful contribution to our local community. So glad that you appreciated the royal treatment from the Butler of Wanaka and that your house "gleamed" and felt "uplifted" on your return!

Lynda Gregg of Albert Town is another of our ‘local heroes’. Lynda is a constant giver in the community - very much a ‘behind the scenes’ person. To give you some idea of why Lynda deserved a Butler of Wanaka ‘Helping Hand’ voucher, Lynda - 1) bakes every Monday night for Mainly Music, often attended by 40 mothers and their children. 2) volunteers her time for face painting at local fundraisers. 3) picks up elderly people to take them to / from church and run errands for them. 4) volunteers her time to babysit for couples that desperately need time off. 6) helps others who are aging and /or single with cooking and cleaning. Lynda spends the few hours of ‘time out’ she has in her garden. Her goal is to make it ‘a picking flower garden’ - so that she can pick flowers through-out most of the year and give them to others. So, not only does Lynda share her time with people, but many have enjoyed the rewards from her garden too. The Butler offered advice and tips to improve the form and layout of Lynda’s garden, got stuck in to prune an unwieldy shrub and will return in late-July to prune her roses. Thank you Lynda for your generosity of spirit ... you are an inspiration to us all!

A gorgeous morning in Wanaka devoted to Mrs Mavis Walker - another well-deserving 'local heroes' nominee. Mrs Walker is 100 years 'young' and that alone deserves some recognition! Mavis had requested a garden blitz with her 3 hour 'Helping Hand' voucher and the Butler got stuck in, kindly assisted by Heather Malcolm - another well-known local! Thank you Mavis for your inspiration and fine morning tea. May you continue to enjoy the delights of your garden for many years to come!

The first of our ten 'local heroes' (Lynn Fegan) contacted the Butler of Wanaka and requested a 'home-cooked' dinner for her husband Ralph ... a real treat for someone who had been without for a lengthy period. The Butler obliged with a delicious wild rabbit casserole, accompanied by minted, new-season Jersey Benne potatoes, baby carrots and green beans, followed by a mouth-watering home-baked chocolate log served with fresh berries and cream. Yum! According to Lynn, Ralph was "... ecstatic - home has never been so good!!" Well done Butler ... keep up the good work!

The following ten ‘runner-up’ nominees will receive well deserved leisure time with a ‘Helping Hand’ voucher for 3 hours of BoW services - Fe Howie, Heather Halliday, Shirley Haig, Lynda Gregg, Brona Parsons, Anique Williams, Carol Little, (jointly) Kate Bariletti & Jan Janatta, Mavis Walker and Lynn Fegan. All of these women work quietly away in the background, selflessly offering their time for the benefit of others. Many have been through a great deal this year. Congratulations and thank you one and all. You are all ‘local heroes’ and we are blessed to have you in our community!

We were humbled by the calibre of the nominations and would have liked to offer the ‘super hero’ prize to all of our nominees. Clearly, there are so many wonderful people in our community who never stop doing stuff for others, not to mention those who have really been through a lot this year! However, one nominee stood out from the crowd. Our ‘super hero’ is ... (drum roll) ... Emily Sancha of Albert Town, Wanaka. Emily had a host of nominations and is indeed a ‘local hero’ – constantly giving back to the community through a range of community events and projects. It was clear from the nominations that Emily is a major source of inspiration to many in our community. To quote from one of her nominators - “She works hard, plays long, loves deeply and cares unconditionally”. Congratulations Emily ... look forward to treating you to a sumptuous picnic whilst the BoW team gets your property ship- shape with a full House and Garden Blitz (8 hours of house & garden services). In the meantime, all the very best for a Joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year!
