With the weather cooling off some might be tempted to light the fire shortly.
Have you fire checked before you do to make sure it is safe.
Replace broken and unsafe components* and remove bird nests.
I can even perform smoke detector checks and replacements.

Fires are a great source of heat for you and your family and there is something about the atmosphere of a fire.
Make sure it's safe to operate:
Remove the top plate or have the dampener open and look up the flue to see if it's clear, do this on a bright day and with a cool fire box and maybe use your cellphone camera just try not to drop it (as in the photo, you should see light at the top which bean you do not have an obstruction).
Next is how dirty does your flue look? Is there a build up of black fluffy or shiney stuff? This may need to get removed especially if thick. Where this is usually a problem is above the roof line where cold air meets hot/warm pipe and dependant on the moisture in the wood. This causes a build up on your down-draught guard (top hat/cowl). This Dan cause unsafe and uneconomical conditions for your fire.
If gases cannot escape effectively through the flue they can come back into your fire box causing inefficient burning or suffocating of your fire. And even worse these gases can enter your living space and cause serious harm to you and your family.
You can remedy this issue yourself, however, it can get messy so remember a top sheet and be safe especially if you are going on your roof.

As the nights become longer and colder please think about your safety.
