**Big news from Te Moata 🌿**
After four years since our last confirmed kiwi sighting, we finally have a new reason to celebrate. A kiwi has been photographed on one of our monitoring cameras! 🎉
With cameras positioned across different areas of the bush, it was an exciting moment to discover this special visitor on film.
Over the coming week, TeMoata Retreat Centre will be taking part in a wider kiwi survey across the Coromandel, with acoustic recorders being placed in the far hills. We hope to record the same kiwi pair we heard calling last year, along with any other kiwi in the area.
We have also been finding kiwi probe holes around the property, another encouraging sign that these treasured birds may be becoming more active on the land.
It's heartening to think that kiwi numbers could be slowly increasing, supported by ongoing predator control efforts and habitat connections throughout the wider landscape.
A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this work over the years. Moments like this remind us of the importance of caring for and protecting this beautiful sanctuary.
Here's to more kiwi calls, footprints, and sightings in the years ahead.🌿
