☀️It's all go at the Sheffield Memorial Pool this Saturday morning!

The hard yards are underway as we get the pool ready to be filled for a summer of sunshine and swimming. We can’t wait!

A huge thank you to Tim O’Toole from Rock Control and Curt Freeman from Diamond Grinding Services for giving up their weekend to help make it happen.

And these two aren’t even Sheffield locals - they’re Kirwee boys! How good is that? 💙

Last night, members of the Tawera Community Trust had the pleasure of attending the 2026 Malvern Community Services Awards, where our Chair Zara Sandom was recognised for her tireless support of the Sheffield Memorial Pool.

Zara has given years of her time, energy and care to this project, helping work towards a secure future for a place that means so much to our community. That kind of commitment takes dedication, patience and persistence, and we’re very glad to see her contribution acknowledged.

For generations, the pool has been a place where children learn to swim, families spend time together, and neighbours catch up over summer. Zara’s work is helping carry that tradition forward for the families who use it today and those still to come.

Congratulations, Zara, and thank you. We’re grateful for all you’ve given to the pool and our community. This recognition is so well deserved.

Looking for a Few Handy Helpers!

We’ve got a couple of big jobs coming up, and we’re looking for 2–3 handy people to help us get stuck into some important maintenance work at our community pool.

📅 Saturday 31 October & Sunday 1 November

What’s on the job list?
- Emptying the main pool
- Water blasting the main pool
- Grinding out some of the larger cracks and filling them in, along with the old drain at the bottom of the pool
- Giving the toddlers’ pool a spruce-up, too!

🔧 Who are we looking for?
We need a few capable, practical people who are comfortable using larger commercial grade equipment, including water blasters and grinders (these will be supplied).

Can you spare a day, or half a day? If you’re handy with tools, happy to roll up your sleeves and keen to help make a difference, we’d love to hear from you!

We’re working really hard to get you swimming at the Sheffield Memorial Pool this summer!

You'll see us cleaning up the pool and making a few repairs over the next couple of weeks as we prepare to reopen.

There are still a few steps to work through with Selwyn District Council before we can promise an opening date. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

We’ll also be looking for volunteers to help keep it running through the summer. Keep an eye out for ways to get involved!

🏊Big News for Sheffield!🏊

We're thrilled to share that the Selwyn District Council has ring-fenced the $160,000 demolition fund and agreed to grant it to the Tāwera Community Trust — meaning the Sheffield Memorial Pool is on track to make the necessary repairs.

This outcome is a direct result of your support. To everyone who put in a submission to the Annual Plan back in April — thank you. You helped make this happen.

From Mayor Lydia Gliddon:
During Annual Plan Deliberations last month, the Council agreed to ring-fence the $160,000 demolition for the Sheffield Pool and grant this funding to the Tāwera Community Trust, once ownership of the pool has formally transferred to the Trust.

The decision follows strong community support to return the pool to local ownership and ensures the facility can continue as a valued community asset into the future.

Sheffield Memorial Pool has been part of the local community since it opened in 1953, and Council will continue working with the Trust to support a smooth transition through the legal transfer process.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the outcome reflected what can be achieved when a community works together.

“This shows the power of community. People came together, shared their views, and backed a solution that keeps something important to them going. That commitment has made this outcome possible.”

The decision will be finalised on June 30 as part of the Annual Plan.
