šŸŠBig News for Sheffield!šŸŠ

We're thrilled to share that the Selwyn District Council has ring-fenced the $160,000 demolition fund and agreed to grant it to the Tāwera Community Trust — meaning the Sheffield Memorial Pool is on track to make the necessary repairs.

This outcome is a direct result of your support. To everyone who put in a submission to the Annual Plan back in April — thank you. You helped make this happen.

From Mayor Lydia Gliddon:
During Annual Plan Deliberations last month, the Council agreed to ring-fence the $160,000 demolition for the Sheffield Pool and grant this funding to the Tāwera Community Trust, once ownership of the pool has formally transferred to the Trust.

The decision follows strong community support to return the pool to local ownership and ensures the facility can continue as a valued community asset into the future.

Sheffield Memorial Pool has been part of the local community since it opened in 1953, and Council will continue working with the Trust to support a smooth transition through the legal transfer process.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the outcome reflected what can be achieved when a community works together.

ā€œThis shows the power of community. People came together, shared their views, and backed a solution that keeps something important to them going. That commitment has made this outcome possible.ā€

The decision will be finalised on June 30 as part of the Annual Plan.

A quick update from the Sheffield Memorial Pool team.

Firstly, thank you.

Thank you to every single person who took the time to make a submission to the Selwyn District Council Draft Annual Plan.

As part of the Annual Plan process, the Tāwera Community Trust requested that the $160,000 currently budgeted by Council for demolition of the Sheffield Memorial Pool instead be redirected to the Trust to support refurbishment of the pool facility for future community use.

The support of our community continues to remind us just how much the Sheffield Memorial Pool means to people across the district.

Last week Zara, Tegan and Michelle from the Tāwera Community Trust presented to Council during Day 1 of the Selwyn District Council Draft Annual Plan Hearings.

If you would like to watch our presentation, you can do so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q23dLj9Q-w&t=15940s

At this stage, we are now awaiting Council’s decisions and next steps.

As soon as we hear more, we’ll let the community know. We appreciate that many people are eager for updates, and we will continue to communicate openly as information becomes available.

In the meantime, thank you again for standing alongside us as we work toward securing the future of the Sheffield Memorial Pool for generations to come.

What an amazingly successful day!
$25,000 raised for the pool.
We are so very grateful to the Malvern Lions, all the players, sponsors and supporters of today's event.

The funds raised will go towards our operating costs and most importantly towards replacing our disintegrating pool covers.
Thank you.

It's a stunning day here at Greendale Golf Club with the Malvern Lions!

We need your help to secure $160,000 for the pool.

The Selwyn District Council is currently consulting on its Draft Annual Plan, and this is a critical moment for our community.

Council had previously set aside $160,000 for the demolition of the Sheffield Memorial Pool. We’re asking that the funding be redirected to the Tāwera Community Trust so it can be used to refurbish the pool instead.
This is not new money; it is already budgeted. Redirecting it will not affect funding for any other Council projects.

What it will do is give us a genuine chance to restore a
much loved community asset with over 70 years of history.
Due to years of underinvestment, the pool now requires significant work. The goal of the Trust is a proper refurbishment that will provide a long-term solution, backed by a 10-year warranty.
Securing this $160,000 is a vital first step. It will allow the Trust to move forward quickly and strengthen applications to external funders such as lotteries and community foundations, helping unlock further investment.

One small action from you makes a real difference Consultation is open now until 26 April. We need as many people as possible to make a submission in support of redirecting these funds.
