Hello potential customers and existing customers, with the coronavirus coming into its full swing in our area and more families and students being home now in Taranaki as we are in Level 4 Lockdown the hydraulic load on your septic system will certainly be stressed out. A few tips to help manage water consumption
1 - Dont think of this as a great time to get caught up on all of your laundry, a septic system is designed for an average daily flow (140 litres per person per day) and adequate resting periods such as when you are away at work or school and during the night when you are sleeping. With more individuals being home all through out the day your system is seeing above average daily flows. This doesn’t mean that you cannot do laundry, just do a load or two per day and try and skip a few days in between washing. This should also be done even if you are not home all day. Washing 5-10 loads of laundry per day stresses your system out and can cause premature failure of your drain field.
#2 - Do not use unnecessary amounts of bleach or any other chemical that may harm the (helpful) bacteria inside your septic tank, killing the bacteria by over using harsh chemicals and cleaners will have a negative effect on the way the septic tank breaks down waste.
#3- leaky faucets...get them repaired or replaced when able
#4 - Avoid extra long showers and try to take more showers than baths in this time, shower heads put out 8-10 litres /minute, a bath can use as much as 100 - 200 litres of water. A 10 minute shower will use 80 - 100 of water.
