Heavy rain is forecast for parts of the South Island today and the North Island from tomorrow (Monday).

Stay updated through https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home and your local Civil Defence Emergency Management Group pages.

If you’re travelling this long weekend in areas under weather warnings drive to the conditions.

Remember, never try to walk, swim, drive, or play in flood water.

If you see rising water, head for higher ground immediately - don't wait for an alert on your phone.

Landslides are a risk not just during heavy rainfall, but in the days and weeks after. Trust your danger sense - if you suspect that a landslide is about to occur, get away immediately.

🟠🟡A Strong Wind Warning and Heavy Rain Watch are in place for Taranaki this afternoon though until this evening (Friday 8 May)

Strong winds can bring down trees and powerlines, make driving difficult and turn unsecured items into hazards. Heavy rain can also quickly lead to slips, surface flooding and dangerous road conditions.

If you haven't already now is a good time to:
👉Secure anything outside that could blow away
👉Charge phones and devices
👉Check drains and gutters are clear
👉Think about your travel plans especially if you are heading out of our region north

Road conditions can change quickly during severe weather. SH3 through Awakino Gorge area is already operating under restrictions and closures due to ongoing slip damage and roadworks. Further rain and wind may impact access or cause additional disruptions.

Before travelling check:

👉MetService Weather warning and watches

STATE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY DECLARED FOR WHANGANUI DISTRICT
7.30AM, Sunday 19 April

Due to severe rainfall across the middle and upper catchments of the Whanganui River overnight, Mayor Andrew Tripe has declared a state of local emergency for the Whanganui District at 6.57am this morning due to forecast flooding from river levels.
Flood levels are forecast to:

· Come very close to the top or overtopping the stopbanks at Kōwhai Park
· Likely to close Whanganui River Road and affect upper river areas where roads will be affected in several locations including at the Whanganui River Hunting and Food Festival at Pungarehu Marae.

This means we need residents of riverside flood prone locations to prepare to evacuate and if required, evacuate designated areas. These areas include:
• The lower area of Whanganui East, Anzac Parade
• Lower area of Taupo Quay and the lower boardwalk areas
• Upper River communities
• Lower areas of Putiki, which may have water across roads and through marae/kohanga reo locations

Residents who wish to proactively evacuate are encouraged to do so to whānau or friends in the first instance. Emergency Evacuation Centres will be at St Paul’s Church in Guyton Street and Whanganui Girls’ College, Whanganui East, and will open later this morning. Partners are working with vulnerable communities, including our homeless.

The community can expect roads to be closed and cordons to be in place.

“We need residents to prepare to evacuate seriously and to self-evacuate early if you are already concerned. If at any point you feel unsafe – dial 111”, says Mayor Andrew Tripe.

“We have a great team of Emergency Management Staff, Red Cross, Emergency Services, volunteers, community, Defence Force and Regional and Local Council staff all doing their part to support you – and we now need Whanganui residents to do their part”.

Residents should follow the Council’s page and website for the latest updates. An emergency management advisory will also follow this morning.

Ruapehu District Council declared a local state of emergency at 3.21am this morning.

Weather warning for this weekend: this advice still applies. Maybe check your gutters JIC.

For those affected by the severe weather over the weekend, remember to put your safety first with our advice below:

💩 Floodwater can contain sewage and other dangerous materials which can make your home unhealthy.

🏠 Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If you rent your property, contact your landlord and your contents insurance company.

📷 Remember to take photos and videos of the damage and anything that needs to be thrown away before starting the clean-up, for insurance purposes.

🫧 You’ll need to clean, disinfect, and dry your house and everything in it. Take out everything that is wet and that can be moved. Throw away anything that can’t be cleaned.

🛡️ Protect yourself by wearing masks (P2 or N95), gloves, goggles, clothing that covers your arms and legs, and sturdy footwear, as floodwater can hide hidden debris below the surface.

😷 Keep an eye out for mould, and take extra care if you have asthma, allergies, or other breathing problems. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about your health during clean-up.

❤️ Keep tamariki/children and animals away until it’s safe for them.

Cleaning up outdoors? remember to:
🪏 Check before you dig – there may be buried utilities
🏞️ Stay away from flooded areas or waterways
🌳 Be careful around trees that may have been damaged by the weather – they should only be felled by suitably trained persons.
⚡ Treat any fallen power line as live.
🧹 Please don’t try to clear slips or debris on public roads or public land - these need to be assessed and cleared by trained council crews or contractors.

Thank you for the support and aroha you continue to show for the people who have been impacted by the multiple severe weather events this year. Please keep checking on your neighbours and taking care of those around you.

Please take time to review this post. Floodwaters can be dangerous. We are here for you if and when you are affected. Keep safe Whanau.

⚠️ A regional pre-emptive state of emergency has been declared. This declaration covers the entire Manawatū-Whanganui Region and applies as of 6.37pm today (Sun 15 Feb).

The declaration comes in the wake of MetService issuing a red heavy rain warning for parts of Ruapehu, Rangitīkei and Manawatū. This rain is forecast to mainly fall in the ranges before flowing through rivers towards the coast.

This shows how seriously we are taking this weather event. You too should take it seriously:

✅ Move items away from areas of your property that usually flood.
✅ Clear gutters and drains where it is safe to do so.
✅ Bring inside anything that could be lifted by strong winds, or tie it down securely.
✅ Bring pets inside where possible.
✅ Charge phones and devices.
✅ Stay away from areas at risk of slips.
✅ Move livestock in low lying areas to paddocks that are safe from floodwaters, landslides, isolated trees, and power lines.
✅ If a landslide occurs, keep well clear - further movement can happen without warning.
✅ Stay out of the water and away from beaches.
✅ Be prepared to move to higher ground if needed.
✅ Secure boats and trailers properly.
