Last Thursday we opened our doors to year 10 students from both Horowhenua and Waiopehu Colleges for Get-Go Futures day.

Get-Go Futures day is an initiative created by The Horowhenua Company Limited in conjunction with our local colleges. This initiative enables year 10 students and teachers the opportunity to visit local employers in the Horowhenua region, to gain a better understanding about the world of the workforce and to explore future employment options.

We had three stations set up that showcased:
• Hydro and Air Excavation trucks - with a live demo on how they operate, demonstrated by our young guns - Glyn (22yrs, class 4 Operator), Thomas (21yrs, Class 4 Operator) & Jayden (22yrs, Up and Coming Operator).
• A presentation delivered by Jess that covered everything JB’s, what we’re about with hands on learning while earning and the opportunities for personal and professional development.
• A presentation and talk through delivered by JB himself on a new recycling initiative we are in the process of setting up.

Here at JB’s it is our goal to not only create but to contribute to a local and sustainable workforce by pairing licensing, on the job learning and experiences and sharing our industry experience through mentorship. We hope that we have inspired the and hope to see some of them walk through our doors in a few years time.

A big thank you to the rest of our team that helped not only throughout the day, but with the set up and pack down.

Kapiti Big Fish is hosting a surf casting competition the weekend of the 12th & 13th of April, 2025 🎣

Being keen fishermen/fisherwomen ourselves we are proud to be supporting Kapiti Big Fish Surfcasting Competition as this is a family oriented event where all ages and skillsets can join in on some healthy competition. For many it's not always about the fishing but another opportunity to hang out with the family amongst the fun atmosphere.

A community led, community driven organisation we’re proud to be supporting!

Two weeks ago the finished and completed product of Johns signwriting craftsmanship went out our doors. This is the second van we have sign written for the team at the Horowhenua Community Health Shuttle and we could not be happier with the finished product.

The Horowhenua Community Health Shuttle provides five return trips to Palmerston North for the members of the community who may be without transport or who are unable to drive themselves to attend medical appointments.

We would like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank you for the support and continued support you all have shown us this year. It really means a lot to us that you choose us to carry out the services required.

▪️ We will be back and hitting the ground running Monday 13th January 2025! 🎉

▪️This also means our yard will be closed for this period.

Our friends over at Fulton Hogan (Liam and Taine) are fundraising for an epic cause - Cure Kids. Last Friday Liam and Taine had their hair cut in order for it to be donated and used to make wigs.

They have nearly reached their goal of fundraising $10,000 to go towards medical based research to help save, extend and improve the lives of children diagnosed with serious life-impacting and life-limiting health conditions.

Here at JB’s we try to support our community sporting events as much as we can and where we can, over the weekend we sponsored the horse showhunter ring at the Wellington Horowhenua Showjumping Group Jumping & Showhunter Championships.

The sun was shining and made for a good weekend for all riders, well done to all competitors and place getters in their respective classes who competed in this ring over the weekend.

There were two rugs up for grabs in two separate classes; JB’s HydroXtreme Horse Handy Hunter & JB’s HydroXtreme Horse Championship.

A big congratulations goes to Sarah Jocelyn for winning not one but both rugs on her horses Archibald and Springsteen. Another big congratulations to the other place getters in these two classes.

Next up is our Mechanic team 🔧⚙️

Ray, Farris, Wayne, Jacob and Ken.

All of our mechanical work is done in-house and we are extremely lucky to have these five men in our team, the combined wealth of knowledge, experience and attention to detail is second to none. Any issues that a truck presents, it goes straight into our workshop and back out on the road again in record time.

▪️ Ray - Our go to man with any issues or questions, Ray ensures that JB’s is able to undertake it’s daily operations to the highest standard with regular maintenance schedules for all plant and machinery all the while guiding our two apprentices Farris and Jacob.

▪️ Farris - Working part time after school and during the school holidays, it was inevitable that Farris would work with us full time. In 2020, he did just that to start his diesel mechanic apprenticeship under the guidance of Ray, we are looking forward to seeing Farris complete this apprenticeship early next year.

▪️ Wayne - I think in Waynes previous life he was a comedian with his wicked dry sense of humour, every now and then he will pipe up and say something that you just can’t help but giggle at. Not only is Wayne one of our mechanics but he also doubles as a truck driver when and where needed, water deliveries, septic tanks and hydro excavation.

▪️Jacob - Fairly new to our mechanic team, like Farris, Jacob is still working through his apprenticeship and will be a qualified diesel mechanic early next year which again we look forward to.

▪️Ken - Our go to man for any refurbishments on engines, firewood processor maintenance.

Next up is John, John’o, Little John 🖌️

The sign writing you see on our trucks as you pass them, is all done by our very talented colleague and long-time friend John.

Over the past 25 years John’o has been responsible for the image and livery of the JB’s brand as we know it today, from the early days of being a multicoloured combination fleet to red, white, blue, silver and charcoal.

Not only is sign writing in his expertise but he can also turn his hand to patch work as well as painting the cabs and chassis of our trucks. Each and every time the finished product is guaranteed a flawless job.

John’o has now tried to retire not once but twice and always seemed to come back full time. The third time is the charm as now he has and only comes in when there is work to do.

Meet our team!

Without our knowledgeable, experienced and specialised team, JB’s wouldn’t be able to undertake the capacity and variety of jobs that we do on a day to day basis. Over the next few posts we’re going to introduce our team that help aid in keeping JB’s on track to provide our customers with a prompt and reliable service.

First up is Steve’o.

Steve’o is no stranger to knowing the ins and outs of the business, starting here at JB’s before he had even left high school. The level of enthusiasm, passion and can-do attitude this man shows each and every day is truly admirable.

Steve’o is your go-to man for anything and everything Hydro/Air excavation, CCTV work and Jet flushing.

As much as Steve’o would like to be on the tools, he spends most of his day organising his team and their trucks from site-to-site although occasionally you might see him operating a digger or out on a truck.
