Bee Swarm Awareness
Why do they Swarm?
Why is it so important to rehome them?
Honey bee swarms are a natural division of a honey bee colony, they divide to fly out and establish a new colony in a tree or open crevice and build a new home from scratch. They do all this with only the honey they take with them when they leave the parent colony. It is a big risk for a hive to swarm as the bees only have a short window to find a suitable home and the original hive only has 3 weeks to get their new queen mated. Here in New Zealand we have the varroa mite, this mite will and does kill honey bee colonies. A swarm has little chance against varroa. Here in nz there is no cure, only nock down treatments administered by beekeepers. So most if not all swarms that arnt collected by a beekeeper will eventually die from varroa and the diseases they give to honey bees.Thats if they reach a new home on the one tank of honey they took with them.
