We’re a nation of cat lovers, with one of the highest rates of cat ownership in the world – and yet we’re also exceptionally proud of our native birds, a contradiction that is becoming harder to ignore.

🐈📷 Members of the Lake Heron Conservation Group captured a shot of the elusive Black Panther during a pest trapping operation last month, though closer inspection showed it was just a fat, black feral cat sitting near a trap with fish bait in it! 😺

The group has about 120 traps, concentrated mainly on the lake shore, and some have cameras. Five feral cats have been caught in the past month - there’s been a noticeable increase in cats, weasels and possums since 2018. The April pest count also included eight hedgehogs, seven possums, two stoats, two rats and a weasel, all introduced predators that prey on lizards, native birds and their eggs. 🐣

The conservation group relies on volunteers to clear the trapping lines and if you’d like to help out, please email [email protected]

Want to learn how to trap effectively? This is hands down one of the best courses out there.

Spend two days gaining practical skills and learning how to avoid creating trap-shy predators — a game changer for anyone serious about pest control.

Most of our team have completed this course, and we highly recommend it.

The Department of Conservation is now calling for expressions of interest… don’t miss out!

We don’t volunteer in this space so we can do social media… but dang, it’s a good way to connect!

Hi! What’s been your trapping win or nature find over the summer?

Fun fact: over the weekend, the first kākāpō chick was born in four years! It can feel like such a distant story for little ol’ Timaru… but we need to work together as a country to become Predator Free. That’s how we help bring tūī back to Timaru and help endangered birds on remote islands thrive.

Imagine the mainland being safe for a bird that only breeds once every mast year (generally every 4 years)!
