A rangehood filter can look clean on the surface and still feel greasy because cooking residue sits throughout the layers of the metal mesh.

If the wash water is too cool, the cleaning solution is already loaded with grease, or the filter is rinsed too quickly, loosened residue can remain inside the mesh and spread back across it as it dries.

Use warm or hot water and a cleaner suitable for the filter material, give it time to work, then gently clean and rinse from both sides. More scrubbing is not always the answer; thorough rinsing is often what removes the final greasy feel.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using strong degreasers or a dishwasher, especially with aluminium filters.

If you've ever dusted a shelf only to watch fine dust gather into little rolls or get pushed to the edge, the cloth may be the problem rather than the surface.

Microfibre works by trapping tiny particles between its fibres. Once those fibres become loaded with dust, lint or fabric softener residue from previous washes, the cloth can't hold much more. Instead of collecting dust, it starts moving it around.

A quick check is to fold the cloth and use a fresh section as you clean. If that works noticeably better, it's a sign the original side was already full.

Washing microfibre separately from linty laundry and avoiding fabric softener helps keep the fibres working as intended. Sometimes the difference between a clean result and a frustrating one isn't the cleaning spray at all—it's the condition of the cloth.

A bathroom basin can look perfectly clean while a stale smell keeps returning from the drain area.

The visible bowl may not be the source. Soap residue, toothpaste and organic matter can collect inside the pop-up waste fitting or the basin’s overflow channel—places that are regularly exposed to water but rarely cleaned directly.

A useful clue is when the smell becomes stronger after running the tap. Check around the plug mechanism and just inside the overflow opening, then clean only the parts you can safely access with a small brush and suitable bathroom cleaner. The exact method depends on the basin and waste fitting, so avoid forcing components that are not designed to be removed.

A dark grey line along the edge of a carpet is not always an area that was missed while vacuuming.

It can be filtration soiling. Small amounts of air move through gaps beneath skirting boards, around doorways or between rooms. The carpet fibres act like a filter, gradually trapping fine airborne dust in a narrow line.

A useful clue is the shape: the mark follows the wall or doorway closely while the surrounding carpet still looks reasonably clean. Because the soil sits deep beside the edge, a normal vacuum head may not reach it properly. A crevice tool can remove loose dust, but an established line may need targeted carpet cleaning.

Scrubbing it aggressively or applying a strong spot cleaner can make the edge look uneven without addressing the airflow that caused the mark. If the line slowly returns after cleaning, a small gap or draught nearby may be part of the reason.

Silvery or grey marks on a ceramic cooktop are not always scratches.

Cookware—especially aluminium-based pans—can leave a thin layer of metal on the glass as it is moved across the surface. Once the cooking residue has been wiped away, that transfer can remain as pale arcs or streaks that seem to sit inside the cooktop.

A useful check is to look at the mark from an angle. A true scratch usually interrupts the surface and may catch a fingernail, while metal transfer often looks smooth and changes as the light moves across it.

Let the cooktop cool completely, then try a small amount of cleaner made specifically for ceramic or glass cooktops with a soft, non-scratch cloth or pad. Avoid steel wool and aggressive scouring powders, which can create permanent damage while trying to remove a mark that may only be sitting on the surface.

A front-loading washing machine can develop a musty smell even when the stainless-steel drum looks perfectly clean.

The source is often the rubber door seal, especially the lower folds. Small amounts of water, detergent residue, lint and hair can collect there after each wash. Because that area receives little airflow, it may stay damp long after the visible drum has dried.

A maintenance cycle can help clean parts of the machine, but it may not remove debris physically trapped inside the seal.

Every so often, gently pull back the rubber folds and check the lowest section. Remove any trapped material, wipe the area using a cleaner suitable for the machine, then dry it. Keeping the door and detergent drawer slightly open between washes, where practical and safe, also helps moisture escape.

The useful clue is simple: when the drum looks clean but the smell returns quickly, check the hidden folds around the door.

Small orange spots on a stainless-steel sink do not always mean the sink itself is rusting.

Ordinary steel wool can leave tiny fragments of carbon steel behind after scrubbing. Those fragments may be almost invisible at first, but once they stay damp, they rust and leave orange-brown marks on the stainless surface.

A non-scratch pad or soft cloth is usually a safer choice. After cleaning, rinse the sink well and dry it so loose metal particles and moisture are not left sitting on the surface.

For existing marks, use a cleaner confirmed as suitable for stainless steel, work gently with the direction of the brushed finish, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid chlorine bleach and further scrubbing with steel wool, as both can make corrosion or surface damage more likely.

Grout lines can look darker straight after mopping, even when the floor is clean.

Many common cement-based grouts absorb a small amount of water more readily than the surrounding tile. Because the grout dries more slowly, its colour may temporarily deepen while the tile surface already looks dry.

A useful check is to leave the floor alone until it has dried fully. If the grout gradually returns to an even, lighter colour, the darker appearance was probably moisture rather than remaining dirt.

Dark patches that stay uneven after drying may have another cause, such as trapped residue, worn sealer or soil held in the grout. Checking the floor when it is completely dry gives a much clearer picture than repeatedly cleaning grout that is still damp.

Touch points need regular cleaning because they are used all day.

Door handles, light switches, lift buttons, shared cupboard handles, and reception counters can be touched by many people before lunch.

They may look fine, but they still need proper attention during an office clean.

Keeping touch points clean is a simple habit that makes a workplace feel better maintained.

Dust does not only sit on flat surfaces.

In offices, dust often builds up on monitor stands, chair bases, window ledges, shelf edges, cable areas, and the tops of door frames.

These places are easy to miss because they are not always at eye level.

Good dusting is about slowing down enough to check the hidden edges as well as the obvious surfaces.
