Thanks to Waterview Laundromat - Waterview and Waterview Coffee Project for letting me hang out with my folding chairs today - great to see so many folks at the market and heading into the busy laundromat (which has a free book shelf inside too cc Little Community Libraries of New Zealand!)

It’s been quite hard to find a good spot to hold a councillor clinic in Waterview, so I especially appreciate the generosity of these two local businesses helping me out so I can be available for their neighbourhood.

I may have also bought a pair of earrings, a bag of cute little tea candles, a jar of herbal chest rub, and a bacon butty (yum).

I’m a little unwell at the moment so please check here tomorrow if you are intending to come along to my Lynfield (11-1) and Morningside (2-4) councillor chats on Sunday 19th April, just in case I have to reschedule.

Adding fabric softener to towels actually makes them worse at doing their job over time 😅 Here’s why:
🧽 It coats the fibres
Fabric softener leaves a waxy, silicone-type coating on the towel fibres. That coating makes towels feel soft at first, but it repels water — the exact opposite of what you want from a towel.
💦 Reduced absorbency
Because of that coating, towels stop soaking up water properly. You end up rubbing yourself dry instead of getting dried.
🧼 Builds up over time
With regular use, softener residue builds up in the fabric. Towels can start to:
Smell musty
Feel greasy or stiff
Take longer to dry
🦠 Traps bacteria & odours
That residue can trap moisture, detergent, and body oils, creating a perfect environment for bacteria — hello funky towel smell 👋
🔥 Not great for dryers
The coating can also reduce airflow in the towel fibres, meaning longer drying times and extra wear on dryers.
👍 What to use instead
Skip fabric softener completely for towels
Use less detergent (overuse causes buildup too)
Add ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse occasionally — it removes residue and restores absorbency (no vinegar smell once dry)
Your towels won’t feel “slippery soft,” but they’ll be fluffy, fresh, and actually absorbent — which is the goal.

Here’s why using less detergent actually gives you cleaner laundry:
1. Too much detergent doesn’t rinse out properly
Modern washers (especially high-efficiency machines) use less water. Extra detergent can get trapped in fabric, leaving residue behind instead of washing away.
2. Residue = stiff, dull, and smelly clothes
Leftover detergent builds up in fibres, making clothes feel stiff, look faded, and hold onto odours rather than smell fresh. That “not quite clean” smell? Often detergent overload.
3. More suds = less cleaning power
It sounds backwards, but too many suds stop clothes from rubbing against each other properly — and that friction is what helps lift dirt out.
4. Skin irritation & allergies
Excess detergent left in clothes can cause itchy skin, rashes, and irritation — especially for kids and people with sensitive skin.
5. Machines last longer
Overuse causes soap scum and buildup inside the machine, leading to smells, blocked parts, and costly repairs.
6. Better for the environment (and your wallet) 🌏
Less detergent means:
Less chemicals going down the drain
Fewer plastic bottles
More washes per bottle = saving money
How much should you actually use?
Most people only need ½ to 1 cap (or even less for soft water). For HE machines, less than you think is almost always enough.
Rule of thumb:
If you see lots of bubbles during the wash — you’re probably using too much 😉
Clean clothes. Fresh smell. Happier machine. Everyone wins. 👕✨
