The FMANZ - Facilities Management Association of New Zealand Conference is always a highlight on our annual calendar, and in recent years we've been proud to support it as the Platinum Sponsor.
At Hydrovac, we spend a lot of time working alongside facilities managers, helping keep the things most people never see running as they should. From CCTV pipe inspections and drain cleaning to stormwater maintenance, we're often behind the scenes making sure problems are found, fixed and prevented before they become bigger headaches.
At FMANZ, we get to catch up with familiar faces, meet new people and connect with an industry we work alongside every day. Being a Platinum Sponsor is our way of giving a little back to the people and industry that are such a big part of what we do.
Thanks to Jo and the FMANZ team for bringing everyone together and creating another successful event!

Employee of the Month - Leo! 🙌

Leo from our Engineering team has been nominated by Cody, a manager from another division, who wanted to recognise his teamwork and willingness to go above and beyond.

From fabricating supports for our South Auckland yard to using his engineering skills to create extra equipment, Leo is always happy to help the wider HydroVac team.

And it’s not just his work that makes him stand out. Cody says Leo is a colourful character who brings a happy attitude to work and always makes a point of saying good morning to everyone 🤩

Thanks for all you do, Leo. Well deserved! 👏

Q. Why inspect pipes before construction?
A. Before construction starts, we're often asked to inspect and locate existing drainage assets.

Not because there's a problem – but because people want to avoid creating one.
Knowing exactly where a pipeline sits, how deep it is, and what condition it's in makes life a lot easier when new services, retaining walls, foundations or structures are being built nearby.
It's much cheaper than discovering the pipe with an excavator!
It also gives you a baseline – inspect pre-project then post-project so you can determine whether any damage was new or there from the start.

The cheapest drainage problem? The one you find early.

Most drainage failures don't happen suddenly – they develop gradually through:
• Cracks
• Roots
• Corrosion
• Settlement
• Joint failures

By the time symptoms appear above ground, the repair options are often disruptive and more expensive.

A proactive, regular CCTV inspection can help identify issues while they're still manageable and allow maintenance budgets to be planned rather than emergency funds to be found.

We'd much rather help a customer prevent a problem than respond to one at 2am after an overflow. (Although we'll do both.) Add annual pipe inspections to your property maintenance schedule for peace of mind and to catch any costly issues early.

Between Scott, Colin, Alan, Matt, Jase, George, Cargan and Santana, our CCTV team has 46 years of combined experience.
Technology changes. Software improves. The cameras get better.
But experience still counts for a lot when you're trying to work out what's really happening inside a pipe.
Our teams' experience goes a long way to getting the kind of results and value you’re looking for on a big job.

This is our little guy, ready for a walk into a pipe.
This CCTV tractor can go 500m into a pipe, working in pipes from 150mm wide to 950mm wide. It’s got extra lighting and height adjustment to view every nook and cranny of a pipe.
Even better, its handlers know how to get the best of him so if you’re doing a pipe inspection and want a comprehensive look-around, book in with our team!

One thing we've learned after locating thousands of metres of underground pipework...
The pipes aren't always where the plans say they are!

Sometimes they're centimetres away, sometimes a metre.
Sometimes the depth is completely different.

That's why we spend so much time producing accurate As-Built information for clients. Whether it's a new development, subdivision, retaining wall or civil project, knowing exactly where services are located can save a lot of headaches later for other contractors.

One piece of feedback we hear regularly is: "When HydroVac says that's where the pipe is, that's where the pipe is."
We'll take that!

* Employee of the Month *

A well-deserved recognition this month for 🥳 Soloasa Ahosivi 🥳, who has become a key member of the team and played a vital role in successfully completing the pond renewals at the beginning of the year.

His manager Patrick says: "A bit of a silent warrior, Soloasa isn't someone who looks for recognition - he simply gets in, gets the job done, and isn't afraid of hard work. His willingness to tackle the tough jobs and keep pushing when the work gets challenging has made him someone the team can genuinely rely on.

The development we've seen over the past 12 months has also been fantastic. From growing in confidence and capability on the job to achieving his Class 2 licence, he continues to take positive steps forward and build his skills.

A great example of how consistency, hard work and a willingness to learn pay off. Congratulations, Soloasa - you deserve it." 👏

Oh the irony – most assets on a site are visible, but the ones that can cause the biggest headaches usually aren’t!

Pipes and drainage are a little like your teeth: they’re good, until they’re not… and then they can be damn expensive!

Whether you're managing a commercial property, school, hospital or construction site, your underground drainage network is quietly doing its job every day – until it’s not.

Some of the common issues we've found in doing CCTV:
- Tree root intrusion
- Cracked pipes
- Failed joints
- Silt build-up
- Construction debris left behind after projects

The challenge is that many of these issues can exist for years before they become visible at the surface.

Rather than guessing what's happening underground, get a clear picture of the condition of the network and plan maintenance before problems become emergencies. You’ll be pleased to find a problem now rather than six months from now, trust us!
