Thank you Brooke van Velden MP, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, for the amendments to the WorkSafe Energy Safety Addendum (3rd Edition), released in January 2026.

The updated guidance addresses the issues highlighted in Drive Electric’s white paper on charging work electric vehicles at home. Developed with industry partners – Singer Electric, FleetPartners, Meridian Energy, and PDL by Schneider Electric – the paper outlined how the previous requirement that employer-owned EVs be charged in a garage was creating unnecessary barriers for businesses and excluding many workers.

The new guidance removes that restriction and aligns WorkSafe advice with Aotearoa New Zealand’s existing electrical safety standards, recognising that safety is determined by compliant installation and robust standards.

On behalf of Drive Electric and our more than 70 member organisations, we appreciate Brooke van Velden’s leadership in resolving this issue and ensuring practical, workable guidance for businesses transitioning to electric fleets.

The Electricity Networks Aotearoa (ENA) has released a new EV Journey Charging report.

It is a useful contribution to the conversation, but its narrow focus on passenger vehicle charging along state highways risks underestimating what will be needed to support EV uptake in Aotearoa.

Journey charging is only one part of the picture. Heavy vehicles, tourism destinations, and high-capacity charging hubs will all be critical to a confident national charging network.

Rolling back support for EV uptake isn’t just an environmental step backwards — it’s a poor capital-management decision for Aotearoa. It means we keep spending billions on imported fossil fuels, sending our money offshore, instead of running our transport system on low-cost, home-grown renewable energy.

Supporting EVs keeps more value here, strengthens our energy independence, and lowers costs for households and businesses over time.
This isn’t just about emissions. It’s about smart economics for Aotearoa.

Last night we celebrated 10 years of ChargeNet NZ! Hon Christopher Bishop joined us to recognise the huge impact they’ve had on Aotearoa’s electric future.

Big congratulations to founders Steve and Dee West for your vision and persistence. Thanks also to Genesis for backing their growth, and to the ChargeNet team – past and present – for all your hard work. You’ve truly paved the way for so many to follow.

We’re excited about what’s next. The Government has committed to 10,000 public EV chargers by 2030 – building on the strong foundation pioneers like ChargeNet have created.
