Thank you Brooke van Velden MP, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, for the amendments to the WorkSafe Energy Safety Addendum (3rd Edition), released in January 2026.
The updated guidance addresses the issues highlighted in Drive Electric’s white paper on charging work electric vehicles at home. Developed with industry partners – Singer Electric, FleetPartners, Meridian Energy, and PDL by Schneider Electric – the paper outlined how the previous requirement that employer-owned EVs be charged in a garage was creating unnecessary barriers for businesses and excluding many workers.
The new guidance removes that restriction and aligns WorkSafe advice with Aotearoa New Zealand’s existing electrical safety standards, recognising that safety is determined by compliant installation and robust standards.
On behalf of Drive Electric and our more than 70 member organisations, we appreciate Brooke van Velden’s leadership in resolving this issue and ensuring practical, workable guidance for businesses transitioning to electric fleets.
