How to Jump-Start a Car!

Materials Needed:

1. Jumper cables
2. A car with a working battery
Steps:
- Park the cars close together: Ensure the batteries are within reach.
- Turn off both cars: This is crucial for safety.
- Connect the red clamp: Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
- Connect the other red clamp: Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
- Connect the black clamp: Attach one end of the black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
- Connect the other black clamp: Attach the other end of the black cable to a bare metal part of the car with the dead battery, away from the battery itself.
- Start the working car: Let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
- Start the dead car: Attempt to start the car with the dead battery.
- Let the cars run: Allow both cars to run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery further.
- Disconnect cables in reverse order: First disconnect the black cable from the dead car, then the black cable from the good car, followed by the red cable from the good car, and finally the red cable from the dead car.
Important Safety Tips:
- Avoid touching the clamps together.
- Never connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery first.
- If the car doesn't start after a few attempts, stop and seek professional assistance.

One essential part of maintaining your vehicle is checking essential car fluids. What are the six critical car fluids, and how do you check them? Learn how to check crucial fluids in your car here, including brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid.

As a car operates, it creates heat. To deal with all the heat, the engine relies on a few essential fluids to lubricate moving parts and keep cool. Here’s a breakdown of seven of those fluids:

1. Engine Oil:

Engine oil is one of the most critical substances in your car’s engine. Unless you drive an electric car, engine oil lubricates moving parts and keeps engine temperatures within a normal range. As a general rule, we recommend checking the oil at least once a month, or more frequently if your car burns or leaks oil, and changing the oil every 5,000-7,000 miles.

2. Coolant:

As the name indicates, the coolant regulates engine temperature. By absorbing heat and dissipating it through the radiator, coolant prevents excessive heat buildup and keeps the engine safe.

When to check it: Coolant has a longer lifespan than engine oil and should be changed every 30,000 miles.

3. Brake Fluid:

Brake fluid transmits your foot’s force on the brake pedal down to the braking system to stop your car. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air and becomes less effective.

When to check it: Brake fluid should be changed at least once every two years and should be checked every 5,000-7,000 miles.

4. Transmission Fluid:

Transmission fluid lubricates and cools the moving components in your car’s gear system. It also functions as a hydraulic fluid, allowing the transmission computer to operate individual mechanical parts.

When to check it: The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles on a manual transmission and every 60,000 to 100,000 miles on an automatic transmission.

5. Differential Fluid:

On four- and rear-wheel drive vehicles, the differential fluid provides cooling and lubrication to the bearings and gears within the differential.

When to check it: Inspect the fluid during each oil change. Change it every 30,000 to 60,000 m

6. Power Steering Fluid:

Power steering fluid makes it easy to manipulate the steering column, creating that easy turn we all love in our cars.

When to check it: Check and change the power steering fluid about every two years or 75,000-100,000 miles.

7. Windshield Wiper Fluid:

Unlike the other fluids on this list, windshield wiper fluid doesn’t serve an essential purpose in your car’s engine or mechanical parts.

The transmission system is one of a vehicle's most basic and important parts. You can define it like this, it transfers power from the engine to the wheels. Transmission refers to the gearbox, which uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque.

It is one of the most complex components of your vehicle, consisting of a series of gears (gearbox). It is primarily responsible for ensuring that the wheels get the right amount of power so that they can operate at a certain speed.

There are many types of car transmissions. The most common are automatic, while manual transmissions in stick-shift cars require the driver to complete additional steps to effectively operate the vehicle. Let’s know the functions of a transmission system.

1. Manual Transmission:

A manual transmission is a system that requires the driver to manually select a gear by operating a gear stick and clutch to change gears. This transmission system consists of a set of gears (different sizes) along with a pair of shafts.

2. Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT):

Simply and quite accurately put the iMT is a clutchless manual transmission. It is similar to a manual gearbox, it has gears and a gear lever. The driver almost feels like an automatic car as the iMT doesn’t have a clutch pedal, but just a brake and an accelerator pedal.

3. Automatic Transmission (AT):

It is a multi-speed transmission utilized in vehicles that do not require any driver to change forward gears under normal driving situations. It consists of a planetary gear set, hydraulic controls, and a torque converter.

4. Automated Manual Transmission (AMT):

An automated manual transmission is an enhanced or modified version of a manual transmission that has eliminated the need to engage the clutch pedal when shifting gears. It is almost similar to a manual transmission but in this system, the sensors and actuators act as clutch and shift gears.

5. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT):

These are pulley-based transmissions primarily used in small vehicles with smaller engines and they can change gears seamlessly through a constant gear ratio. This is in opposition to other transmissions that offer a limited number of gear ratios in fixed stages.

6. Dual-clutch Transmission:

This transmission employs two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets which allow for especially quick shifts. The design is often similar to two separate manual transmissions, in that their respective clutches are within a housing, and operate as a single unit.

That depends on your needs and driving habits. If you want something simple that's easy to use, go with an automatic transmission. If you want better fuel economy, consider a CVT. And if you prefer the traditional driving experience, go for manual transmission.

5) START CAR WITH GOOD BATTERY THEN CAR WITH DEAD BATTERY.

Connecting the negative cable to the car body helps prevent sparks near the dead battery. If the dead battery is damaged or leaking gas (which can happen with lead-acid batteries), any spark could ignite the gas, leading to an explosion.

The car body is a good ground reference point, and it provides a solid electrical connection. This helps ensure that the jump-starting process is effective and that the electrical system can handle the load.

If you connect directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery, there is a risk of accidental short-circuiting, especially if the battery terminals are corroded or if there are loose connections. By connecting to the car body, you minimize this risk.

Connecting to the body allows for a more efficient flow of current. Since the car body is typically a large conductor of electricity, it can help in distributing the current more evenly.
