By the time you see activity in a shipment, the infestation is usually already established. Warm, humid transit and storage conditions are exactly what insects need to spread.

Chemical fumigation only works at the moment it's applied. It doesn't protect the weeks of transit after.

A stable low-oxygen atmosphere removes the environment insects need, for the whole journey, not just one checkpoint.

Peanuts are rich in fat, which makes them prone to going stale and losing flavour during long storage. Hermetic, low oxygen storage is the usual fix.

But a recent peanut storage study found oxygen is only half the equation:

✔ Below a water activity of 0.7 (a measure of how much moisture is actually available inside the peanut), peanuts stayed stable, even with some oxygen present
✔ Above that threshold, oxidation and free fatty acid formation accelerated fast
✔ Nitrogen helped, but only within safe moisture limits

Oxygen control reduces risk. Moisture decides whether that protection holds.
