98.5% of fertilizers used in Ghana are imported. Across the globe, many countries face similar dependencies on imported agricultural inputs, leaving food systems highly exposed to geopolitical shocks. The Strait of Hormuz, through which around 30% of global fertilizer trade passes, has faced months of severe disruption, drastically reducing shipping flows and exposing just how fragile global food systems can be.

In our latest conversation with Safisana Senior Agronomist Daniel Larkai Eden Agronomist, we explore:
🌍 How geopolitical tensions are driving up fertilizer prices and what this means for farmers and food security
🌱 Why local fertilizer production matters for Ghana’s resilience and beyond
♻️ How local circular economy solutions, like Safisana, can help stabilize food systems
🌾 Why organic fertilizers should be part of a national fertilizer resilience strategy

“One of the biggest lessons from recent global shocks, from Ukraine to Iran, is that, as an import-dependent country, we are highly exposed to international disruptions. Our food security is tied to foreign fertilizer producers. So the question is: what happens if these fertilizer-producing plants shut down, or if the Iran conflict continues for several years? Or if another conflict disrupts trade routes? What happens to our food security?” - Daniel Larkai

The conversation is a timely reminder that resilient agriculture starts locally.

Most of the conversation around the Iran crisis is focused on oil prices. But what about fertilizer?

For farmers around the world, the impact is already severe, and likely to grow. Around one-third of global fertilizer trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and fertilizer production itself is closely tied to fossil fuels. That makes food systems far more vulnerable to global shocks than we often realize.

At Safisana, we’ve been working on a different approach for many years: producing organic fertilizers from locally available waste streams. It’s a more local, more resilient model — less dependent on global supply chains, and better connected to the communities it serves.

If you want to read more, we recently shared a press release: www.safisana.org/press-release-fertilizer-price-surge-amid-iran-conflict-shifts-interest-toward-locally-produced-organic-fertilizers

Beyond production of organic fertilizer, we also support farmers directly through training, demonstration plots, and hands-on guidance. A big part of this is working with women farmers, helping to build skills and strengthen livelihoods. If this resonates, you can also support our ongoing projects here: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/agri/

We’re really curious to hear your thoughts on this 👇
Do you think it’s time to rethink how we produce and source fertilizers?

One thing we keep hearing from farmers is how Asase Gyefo Premium Organic Fertilizer improves yield and maintains soil health for a longer period.

Female Farmer Grace told us that by using our , her onion harvest doubled from 30 bags to 70 bags! Increased yield means more income. Beyond yield, what matters is that the soil keeps working, even into the next season.

That’s the difference between short-term gains from chemical fertilizers and long-term soil health from organic fertilizers like Asase Gyefo.

We spoke with f***l waste truck driver Gilbert Yakubu, who explains the importance of his job in keeping the community safe and clean, and how his work as a truck driver helps him take care of his family.

In Ashaiman, f***l waste truck drivers play an essential role in keeping communities safe. They ensure that f***l waste is safely collected, transported, and treated properly instead of ending up in the sea, bushes, or open drains.

The Solution works together with local SMEs and community members, creating green jobs across and economic growth in waste collection, plant operations, composting, and farming. By connecting these activities Safisana contributes to:

- Improved sanitation and public health
- Stronger local economies and livelihoods
- Better soil health and crop growth
- More resilient communities

With over a decade of implementation in Ghana, the Safisana model has proven to be replicable and scalable, offering a practical solution for non-sewered urban areas in different countries facing similar challenges.

Global Recycling Day in Ashaiman

Today, we celebrated Global Recycling Day with something special đź’š

Together with Canvas Kids , we hosted an art class with girls from the community using creativity to talk about recycling, upcycling, and how waste can become something valuable.

Through painting and discussion, the children learned:

1. how waste can be turned into energy and fertilizer

2. why keeping our environment clean matters

3. how they can be part of a more sustainable future

Our colleague Mary led an interactive session that made these ideas simple, engaging, and fun.

We are proud to see the next generation, especially girls, learning about sustainability and the role they can play in shaping their communities.

And we are honoured to be recognised as a Global Recycling Hero, showing that local action can create global impact. ♻️

With coming up this Sunday, we want to recognize the women working in sanitation, who often play invisible yet vital roles in protecting community health and environmental safety.

As Elizabeth Adure. toilet operator in Ashaiman, explains: “Public toilets help the community. The f***l waste is collected and brought to Safisana, where it is recycled into biogas and fertilizer. That way the waste can be used for something better.”
