Team Bananas is a collective of volunteers from all over the world who have gone to the Aegean to help with the crisis that has been inflicted on people fleeing from war. Over fifty thousand people, many of them children, are trapped in Greece. Starting with 4 boxes of bananas (400 bananas) in the beginning of March, Team Bananas was providing the children of Idomeni around 4,500 children with a n

utritious breakfast everyday. When Idomeni was shut down refugee camps were set up in the remote areas around Thessaloniki. Team Bananas went from supplying bananas in 3 camps to 10 camps. Our primary focus remained children, pregnant / breastfeeding women. While the state and international NGOs in Greece are providing the basic needs for the refugees, they receive no other forms of aid. Therefore, Team Bananas is now providing other essentials such as personal hygiene products, mosquito nets, bedding, rice, oil, vegetables and other necessities. Team Bananas also continues to supply bananas to the transient homeless refugees who are too frightened of deportation or have left deplorable conditions of existing camps. Bananas are packed with nutrients, are easy to eat, are filling and don't need washing.

Team Bananas is continuing to work with IHA - InterEuropean Human Aid Association on many projects to help refugees in northern Greece. However volunteers are low and help is needed to prepare and distribute food with SOUL FOOD Kitchen as well as at the Help Refugees warehouse where volunteers sort out orders for dried food or clothing. AtTruck Shop volunteers were helping with translation and greeting and assisting families by explaining how the shop works but this project is temporarily closed.

There are projects in camps running children’s activities such as sports. There are also English language programmes three times a week for a group of men as well as a group of women and German lessons are being taught twice a week for families going to Germany through the family reunification process.

German teachers are needed on a part time teaching basis to take over when the current teachers will be leaving in a month.

Please contact IHA - InterEuropean Human Aid Association for more information on volunteering or help by either making a donation or sharing this message. Thank you.

-Sports activities and an open-air cinema on Saturdays have now been cancelled due to decreasing temperatures and rain.
-Children with low concentration levels and slow motor skills, have made remarkable improvement on their behaviour and personal skills.
-Some of the more enjoyable activities included building kites, theatre, music time with Boombus.

Latest Update

At the Epanomi Centre, Team Bananas has been working with IHA - InterEuropean Human Aid Association on a new project supporting teachers at the school for refugee children. When teachers are busy with one age group, volunteers are looking after the other age groups where children enjoy simple learning goals.

Also at Epanomi, there is a regular distribution of vegetables, dry foods, sanitary pads and nappies and we are also continuing to celebrate birthdays with the children. There are sports on Saturdays and an outdoor cinema in the evening while weather permits. A library has been opened and there is also a sewing project in progress.

We are continuing to provide breakfast for the homeless and transient refugees as well as for local people who are struggling to survive in Thessaloniki city centre. Volunteers do this by helping SOUL FOOD Kitchen and foodKIND as well as helping TruckShop to provide clothes in the city.

Once a week we focus on the food project, packing and delivering food to refugee camps and accommodation and once a month we deliver dry foods.

We are still looking for ANY volunteers especially those who have experience working with children or traumatised children but experience not necessary - a team player and the passion to help is a must.

If you can please support us by sharing this post or via bank transfer. Thank you.

" During my time as a volunteer with Team Bananas, I went to the refugee camps by car with 5 other volunteers where we distributed bananas and danced with the children. One time there were lots of young people around 18yrs old watching the kids dance so i thought I'd approach them and ask them what kind of music they liked. I started to talking to Ahmed and his friends who were eager to show me so we played their music out on the speakers. Everyone started dancing and having fun. I realised that this is why we really need funding for the bananas . In these camps they really need this kind of happiness and fun and for them to meet other friendly people not just the people in the camps. You can see how much they enjoyed and appreciated being together. They're so honest and grateful and happy to see us and I can see why its so important that they know people care for them. I have such deep respect for them because they can still smile despite their situation . I think what Team Bananas is doing is so vitally important because they really need a lot of love but also a lot of laughter and we can help to provide this love by playing with the children and talking and listening to the people and share stories about our lives and cultures." - Volunteer from Holland

"I worked with Team Bananas during June and before I arrived, I didn't really know what to expect. I certainly wouldn't have imagined it being as great as it was. Of course it was really hard at times, especially seeing how difficult some people's situations were and feeling like you're not able to help them as much as you'd wish you could, but there were great moments in which you realised how much sense the work we were doing made. Moreover, I learned so much and certainly have a different outlook on so many things. I guess the most important thing I learned is, as weird as it may sound, seeing the individual behind everything. Talking about 'the refugee crisis', it is quite easily forgotten that in the end we're talking about humans and that's something that should always be kept in mind. So for everyone who's thinking about volunteering: do it. It's not only gonna turn out to be one of your worthiest experiences, but also will help the people a lot." - Team Bananas Volunteer Summer 2017

Updates:
Team Bananas and IHA were involved in a special food project until the end of Ramadam, packing and distributing vegetables & fruits but also bread and dates.

Until last week we were still helping TruckShop with volunteers in the warehouse. however the warehouse will be no longer be in operation from the end of July which means one of our main workspaces will cease to exist.

We continue to be involved in banana, food and meal distribution in collaboration with Help Refugees, foodKIND and IHA - InterEuropean Human Aid Association to various refugee camps, accommodation and to the homeless in Thessaloniki.

TEAM BANANAS IN LEBANON

Once a week the volunteers from Salam LADC سلام distribute bananas in different settlements in Beka Valley Lebanon. They distribute from tent to tent, the same way as we used to in Idomeni (Greek-Macedonian border).
This system works well and everyone gets a banana delivered in a relaxed way.
The kids are so happy when they get a banana, it has often been a while that they had a fresh fruit. The kids who weren`t fasting began eating the bananas as soon the volunteers delivered them. Check the photos of the distributions!

Further, we need your help seriously! A lot of people have problems with getting enough food, and it’s even harder to feed their kids. Lebanon is a very expensive country and its impossible for refugees to work
(it`s not allowed).
Please support us and Salam LADC to bring food to the kids.

You can transfer money to our bank account with the note "Lebanon".

Or trough the donate button on the page of Salam LADC سلام with the note "Team Bananas".

1 banana is -.20 $
100 bananas are 20.- $

Thank you so much for your support!

A Team Bananas project with Hendrik de Kok to help refugees in Lebanon - Currently there are 2,000 refugee camps in Lebanon of which many are informal camps with refugees living in poverty. Lebanon has more refugees than it can handle with 1 in 4 residents being a refugee and many more arriving each day.

There are refugees that have been here for years with no hope for the future as working is not permitted and there are no schools for the children. If they have registered with UNHCR, they receive inadequate monthly funds for the entire family to cover rent and food which are very expensive. NGOs are able to provide some food in the settlements but with very little fresh fruit and vegetables. In Thessaloniki there is a chance to be sent to another European country where refugees can start a life. Here they cannot. Here the situation is dire.

A year ago, Hendrik de Kok, a 22 year old student from the Netherlands began distributing 200 bananas a day in Idomeni. Weeks later, a team of volunteers were distributing almost 5000 bananas a day to the most vulnerable. Thus began Team Bananas. Hendrik is currently working on a collaboration with Salam LADC سلام, who have been working on a number of projects with refugees in Lebanon. Team Bananas will be distributing bananas once a week to children in the settlements and hope to increase distribution more frequently and eventually to pregnant women. Please donate through Salam LADC and mention Team Bananas or contact Hendrik de Kok for volunteering.

This new project will be in addition to the on-going work in Thessaloniki and northern Greece.
