The Gift of Grace: How a Business Partner Became Family
In the world of business, we often talk about "networking" and "contracts." But sometimes, if you’re lucky, you find something much rarer: a mentor who treats you like their own.
For a long time, my team and I relied on a specific lady for our fumigation chemicals. Whenever a big job landed, we’d head to her shop to rent a Knapsack sprayer. Over time, something shifted. It wasn't just a transaction anymore; she started treating me like a son. The rental prices dropped, and eventually, she’d wave her hand at the money entirely. "Don't worry about it," she’d say.
The Turning Point
Recently, we landed a job and I headed over to get our supplies. I asked to rent a sprayer, but the news was grim—every single one of her rental units was broken. My heart sank. You know that feeling when a job is on the line and the tools just aren't there?
Then, she did something that left me speechless.
She walked into the back and emerged with a brand-new Knapsack sprayer, still sealed in its original carton. Right there in front of me, she began unboxing and coupling it together. When she finished, she handed it over.
As I took it, I sighed, "It’s really high time I just bought one of these for myself."
She looked at me, smiled, and said the words I’ll never forget: "You know what? Don’t bring it back. Just take it and pay me in small installments whenever you can."
A Double Portion of Favor
The very next day, a client who had been silent for a month suddenly reached out to confirm a job. As soon as the deposit hit my account, I didn't hesitate. I called her immediately for her bank details and transferred 70% of the total cost of the sprayer. I wanted to honor her trust.
When I went to see her later to buy chemicals, I told her the money was in her account and explained how the job had miraculously come through.
She just smiled—that kind of "Mummy" smile—and said: "Forget about the remaining 30%. The sprayer is yours."
