Why You Should Wash New Clothing First
1. Bacteria
Clothes from the store may seem brand new and untouched, but you never know how many people tried them on before you. One study tested 14 different garments from popular clothing stores. They found bacteria, skin flora, f***l matter, yeast, and respiratory secretions on several different pieces. Running items through a wash and dry cycle will successfully remove particles that might transfer from previous shoppers.

2. Skin Irritants
In most cases, there’s more to your clothing than the materials the labels indicate. Manufacturers often treat garments with various chemicals, including stain repellents, softeners, anti-wrinkle agents, and color enhancers. By the time you bring your purchase home, some residual chemicals may remain, causing the garment to smell. Those with sensitive skin may end up with skin irritation or a rash, while severe cases can even cause dermatitis. The best way to avoid these reactions is by doing your laundry.
3. Dye Transfer
New clothes often contain excess dye that can stain skin and other clothing items that you may be wearing. To avoid your new jeans unintentionally ruining your favorite white shirt, wash these garments first—in a separate load from the rest of your laundry.
