“In this business, if you are not careful… you will pay for what you know nothing about.”

Last weekend, very early in the morning, a woman walked into my shop with her husband’s clothes.
Two sets.
Some for washing and ironing.
Others for ironing only.

We started the normal process counting and inspecting.
We finished checking the ones for ironing…
Then we were about to inspect the others…
Suddenly she said,
“Oga, I no get time. I wan go drop my mama for park. She dey travel go village.”
Before I could even respond… she left.
She said she would come back for her receipt.
She never did.
We continued the work.
While handling the clothes meant for ironing only…
we noticed something.
One of the trousers was already burnt by an iron.

We didn’t touch it.
We didn’t iron it.
We kept it aside… waiting to show her.

Yesterday morning, she came to pick up her clothes.

Everything was arranged and ready.
Then she said,
“One trouser is missing.”
I calmly explained,
“Madam, the trouser get iron burn. We no touch am. We keep am to show you.”
Immediately… everything changed.
Her voice went up.
“You go pay for am! The cloth no burn before I bring am!”

She didn’t even allow me to explain.
She picked up her phone and called her husband:
“Come now! This dry cleaner don burn your cloth and him dey deny!”
Within 20 minutes, the husband arrived.
She handed him the trousers, angry and ready for war.
The man looked at it quietly…
Then he said something that changed everything:
“Na our pikin burn this trouser. I remember. He wan wear am go one small get-together that day.”

Just like that.
My fellow dry cleaners… and every skilled worker out there…
If you don’t protect yourself with proper inspection…
If you allow pressure, emotions, or “I no get time” customers rush you…

You will pay for damage you didn’t cause.
Not because you are wrong…
But because you cannot prove you are right.
In this business:
👉 Inspection is your first defense
👉 Documentation is your insurance
👉 Patience is your protection

No matter how urgent the customer is…
Don’t skip process.
Because one mistake…
can cost you your money, your reputation, and your peace.

Most people stop at the first sign of resistance.

They feel pressure and immediately label it as a dead end.

No test. No push. Just a quick exit to protect their comfort.

Then they wonder why nothing changes.

It’s not bad luck.

It’s weak follow-through.

Opportunities don’t always open politely.

Sometimes you have to force momentum.

Sometimes you have to test what looks closed.

Because the difference isn’t talent.

It’s who’s willing to apply pressure when others walk away.

I WOULD HAVE TAGGED SOME PEOPLE TO THIS POST, IF YOU ARE GUILTY, CHANGE

In this laundry business, I’ve seen a lot.
People smile with you, laugh with you, even call you “my favorite dry cleaner”

But when it’s time to pay for your hard work
they disappear.

Some will say:
“Please release the clothes, I’ll pay when my salary drops.”
“I’ll transfer in three days, I promise.”

You believe them.
You smile.
You release the clothes.

Then the day comes… and nothing.
Calls ignored. Messages seen, no reply.
Some even block you like you’re the one owing them.

They forget the detergent you bought.
They forget the water, the light, the fuel.
They forget your time, your energy, your sweat.
But the worst part is not the money…
It’s the disrespect.

One Lady brought 12 clothes.
I delivered them perfectly neat, fresh, well pressed.

She smiled and said:
“I’ll pay when I get to the office. Just remind me.”

I reminded her… no response.
One day, I went to her house.

The gateman said:
“Sir, madam is inside… but she said anytime you come, I should tell you she’s not at home.”

That moment…
I didn’t feel like a professional.
I felt humiliated.
That day, I made a decision:

NEVER AGAIN.
Now, no matter who you are —
No payment, no clothes.
Not because I’m wicked…
But because I’ve learned.

If you’re a tailor don’t release without payment.
If you’re a makeup artist take a deposit.
If you’re a mechanic no balance, no car.
If you’re a photographer no payment, no final work.
If you’re a caterer — no credit delivery.

We are skilled professionals, not beggars.
We don’t give favors we deliver value.
And value must be respected.

As customer:
When you say “I’ll pay later” and disappear…
You’re not just owing money
You’re taking away someone’s dignity.
Because behind every clean cloth…
Is someone trying to survive honestly.
