⚠️ Scammed Out of RM37,200 in Just 60 Minutes.
The scammers spent more than a week earning our trust, only to steal everything within an hour.
Today, I’ve decided to share our experience publicly. This is not to seek sympathy, but to warn fellow business owners and entrepreneurs so they don’t fall victim to the same scam.
We run a professional cleaning company in Johor Bahru.
On 15 June, we were contacted by someone who impersonated representatives of the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ). They told us that a mosque in Johor Bahru needed approximately 30,000 square feet of carpet cleaning and asked us to submit a quotation.
After we provided the quotation, they informed us that it was a government-related project and requested our company documents to register us as an approved supplier.
For more than a week, they stayed in constant contact with us, following up on documents, discussing the project, and even arranging a site inspection. Everything appeared highly professional, and we had no reason to suspect anything.
The day before the site visit, they suddenly informed us that the project urgently required a generator. They instructed us to purchase it from a “designated supplier,” claiming that our company was currently the only registered supplier for the project.
When we contacted the supplier, they even requested to review the project details, making everything seem completely legitimate.
Believing the project was genuine, we transferred RM12,400 to purchase one generator.
Less than an hour later, they claimed that three generators were required instead.
Trusting the project, we made another payment.
Within just 60 minutes, we lost a total of RM37,200.
Later, they continued pressuring us to purchase even larger equipment. That was when something finally felt wrong.
After verifying everything ourselves, we discovered that the so-called supplier was fake—even the business card they provided was fabricated.
We immediately contacted our bank, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), and the police.
Unfortunately, it was already too late.
Looking back, the scariest part wasn’t how sophisticated the scam was.
It was the patience.
They were willing to spend more than a week building trust. They didn’t try to scam us on day one.
Instead, they gave us what looked like a genuine project, communicated professionally, and created a sense of urgency and a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Only after we completely trusted them did they make their move.
RM37,200 was an incredibly expensive lesson.
I’m sharing this in the hope that no other business owner, contractor, or supplier will have to experience the same thing.
If this post can help even one person avoid becoming the next victim, then sharing our story is worth it.
Please help share this post so more people can stay alert.
⚠️ The case has been officially reported to our bank, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), and the police. The investigation is currently ongoing.
❤️ Life goes on.
