🔹 CKP Sensor: Crankshaft Position Sensor
The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is a key component in the engine management system. Its function is to detect the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft, providing essential information for the ECU (Engine Control Unit) to precisely regulate fuel injection and ignition.
🔹 Importance of Piston Number 1 Position
The CKP sensor, in conjunction with the camshaft position (CMP) sensor, identifies the exact position of piston number 1. This reference is crucial for the ECU to synchronize the ignition of the coils, the activation of the injectors, and other actuators, ensuring efficient combustion and optimal engine performance.
🔹 Types of signals generated by the CKP sensor
✅ Analog (inductive) signal:
Produced by electromagnetic induction sensors, which use a permanent magnet and a coil. When the reluctor wheel teeth pass in front of the sensor, they vary the reluctance of the magnetic field, generating voltage pulses in the form of a sine wave.
✅ Digital Signal (Hall Effect):
Generated by Hall effect sensors, which include a semiconductor material sensitive to magnetic fields. When they detect variations in the field, they produce a digital voltage signal that the ECU uses to calculate crankshaft position and speed.
🔹 Important Considerations
✔️ The voltage and resistance values of the CKP sensor vary depending on the engine manufacturer and model. Before diagnosing or replacing the sensor, it is essential to consult the technical specifications.
